Jurgen Klopp Ruled Out as Liverpool Owners Reportedly Give Up on Brendan Rodgers

Rory MarsdenSep 24, 2015

Jurgen Klopp will reportedly not be the next Liverpool manager despite the Reds owners having decided to call time on Brendan Rodgers' tenure at the club.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss had been touted as the favourite to replace Rodgers, with the Northern Irishman's position at Anfield having come under threat following a bad start to the new season, per Simon Rice in the Independent.

Merseyside football writer Graham Beecroft says the German will "not be the next Liverpool manager" but does reveal Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group has decided to get rid of Rodgers following the Reds' laboured progression in the League Cup on Wednesday against Carlisle, per talkSPORT's Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast:

"

[FSG founder] John W Henry would have looked at that performance and thought, "this is not good enough and a change has to be made", and I understand that is going to happen. In fact, the club board were split in what to do with Brendan Rodgers, but the power base in Boston decided before this game they were going to make the change. This result will simply have reinforced the fact they feel they have to do that.

"

Sky Sports News HQ reports that Liverpool have not contacted Klopp but that he would be interested in working in the Premier League:

Beecroft adds that Rodgers could be granted a stay of execution in the short term if Liverpool's top candidates to replace him are unavailable.

Former Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has been widely touted as a potential option to fill the managerial role at Anfield, but the Reds recently denied having made contact with the Italian, per the Press Association (via the Guardian).

However, he would be an upgrade on Rodgers given his three Champions League victories and his experience of Premier League glory with Chelsea in 2010.

PaddyPower presented an effective pictorial display of the chasm between Rodgers and Ancelotti in terms of success:

If Klopp has been ruled out as an option to take over for Rodgers, there will be some complaints from the Anfield faithful.

He has been widely touted as a manager who could connect with the fanbase at Liverpool and return them to the upper echelons of European football, as he did in his tenure at Dortmund, per Sky Germany's Jan Aage Fjortoft:

There does seem to be a certain heir of inevitability about Rodgers' exit from Liverpool. His side currently sit 13th in the English top flight and required penalties to get past League Two Carlisle in the League Cup.

However, FSG will want to be sure it has a successor lined up before it gets rid of Rodgers for good.
