Ishmael Adams Reinstated to UCLA Football Team: Latest Details and Reaction
Less than 24 hours after it was announced Ishmael Adams would not face felony robbery charges, UCLA head coach Jim Mora announced his star defensive back has been reinstated.
Joey Kaufman of the Orange County Register reported the news. Adams, a junior, had originally been charged with felony robbery and placed on $100,000 bond after allegedly stealing the cellphone of an Uber driver in August. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced Monday that Adams' charge would—at most—be a misdemeanor.
"We reviewed and found insufficient evidence for felony filings, so we referred it to the Los Angeles City Attorney's offices for misdemeanor filings review," said Jane Robison, spokesperson for the Los Angeles district attorney, per Kyle Bonagura of ESPN.com.
Mora said the DA's decision to avoid felony charges played a part in his decision, per Jack Wang of the Los Angeles Daily News.
Adams' return could not come at a better time for UCLA, which moved to No. 9 in the latest Associated Press poll after a one-point win over BYU last week. As part of his Tuesday press conference, Mora announced cornerback Fabian Moreau would miss the remainder of the 2015 season due to a Lisfranc injury, per Kaufman. Had Adams remained suspended, it would have left the Bruins without their top two defensive backs.
Now, the Bruins get a player back who has not only been a two-year starter in the secondary but also returns punts and kicks. UCLA has relied on Devin Fuller to fill those roles so far in 2015 and may continue to do so. Fuller is averaging 24 yards per kick return and 15.8 per punt return.
Even if he doesn't help on special teams, Adams' return is a major boost for a UCLA outfit that's beginning to look like a playoff contender.
