Odds on Where 4-Star DE Isaiah Chambers Will Commit Friday

Sanjay KirpalaniSep 22, 2015

One of the top pass-rushers in the 2016 class is set to come off the board Friday when 4-star defensive end Isaiah Chambers will make his commitment.

Among the schools in the running for the 6’3”, 258-pounder are Arizona State, Baylor, Houston, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M and Washington.

He took his first and only official visit to see the Huskies last weekend, but he has unofficially visited the other five in-state programs this year.

Can the Huskies pluck one of the nation’s elite defensive linemen out of the Lone Star State? If not, which in-state program has the inside track on landing his pledge?

Let’s break down the odds for the schools who are in the mix with Chambers.

Arizona State, Houston, Washington: 20-1

The fact that Chambers is announcing less than a week after his visit to Washington is an interesting development.

As Ruth Robbins of 247Sports notes, Chambers said his trip to Seattle went “great.”

It’s plausible that the Huskies hit a home run with Chambers last weekend and he’s comfortable leaving his hometown of Houston for Seattle.

However, while there’s always a shot with out-of-state prospects when hosting them on visits, luring the nation’s No. 6 strong-side defensive end and No. 97 player overall in the 2016 class still feels like a bit of a long shot in comparison to the home-state schools.

While the hometown Houston Cougars also can't be discounted given the splash new head coach Tom Herman and his staff have made on the recruiting trail, they don't appear to have as much traction with Chambers as some of his other in-state options.

It's worth noting that Chambers had an official visit to Arizona State slated for Nov. 20. However, it's unlikely the Sun Devils will be the pick on Friday given that he's yet to visit their campus.

Texas, Texas A&M: 15-1

Chambers was on hand for Texas A&M’s big win over Arizona State, which was played in Houston, to start the season.

He also took an unofficial trip to Austin in June, so he is very familiar with both the Longhorns and the Aggies.

The Aggies recently received a commitment from fellow in-state 4-star defensive end Justin Madubuike—which likely means that Chambers is headed somewhere other than College Station.

As Horns247 noted, the Longhorns offered Chambers in May—which was well after the other contenders on his short list.

Regardless of his decision on Friday, expect the Horns to continue to recruit Chambers until signing day with hopes of getting him to eventually land in Austin.

Baylor: 8-1

As detailed by BearsTruth, if there is one school that has turned up the heat on Chambers in recent weeks, it’s Baylor.

He made tentative plans to take an unofficial visit to a Bears game this fall, with a possibility of making a return trip in the form of an official visit.

With the Bears having two seniors starting at defensive end this year in Shawn Oakman and Jamal Palmer, Baylor's depth chart is something that could intrigue Chambers.

Additionally, the team has yet to secure a pledge from a defensive end in the 2016 cycle.

Those factors are likely to give the Bears a good shot with Chambers in the end.

TCU: 5-1

As the BearsTruth report noted, TCU is the perceived favorite in the Chambers sweepstakes.

According to Jeremiah Glenn of 247Sports, part of the reason for that is the strong class head coach Gary Patterson and his staff have assembled in the 2016 cycle—particularly with recruits from the metro Houston area.

Another thing the Horned Frogs are selling to Chambers is playing time.

"They tell me that I can come in and compete for a starting spot my freshman year," Chambers told Glenn. "That's pretty big right there, it's just up to me and how hard I work."

While it’s not a slam dunk, most of the momentum appears to be with the Horned Frogs heading into Chambers’ announcement on Friday.
