Oregon WR Commit Dillon Mitchell Scores 6 TDs for 2nd Time This Season

Damon SaylesSep 21, 2015

The numbers Dillon Mitchell put up Friday normally are reserved for video games.

When the 4-star Oregon wide receiver commit left the field Friday night for Memphis' White Station High School, he had just as many touchdowns as White Station's opponent, Arlington. Mitchell scored six touchdowns in three different ways to lead White Station to a 49-42 win.

According to John Varlas of theย Commercial Appeal, Mitchell rushed three times and scored on runs of 80, 77 and 85 yards. Mitchell also scored twice as a receiver, catching touchdown passes of five and 31 yards. The sixth score may have been the best, as Mitchell, as a defensive back, intercepted a pass and returned it 100 yards to give White Station the lead for good.

What's scary is Friday wasn't his first six-touchdown game. Late last month, Mitchell scored six timesโ€”five receiving touchdowns and a rushing scoreโ€”in a win against DeSoto Central.

"I can't say I was expecting it, but I knew I could do it again," Mitchell told Bleacher Report. "I didn't know when it would come. It just did, and I went with it."

Friday's performance gave Oregon followers visions of another dangerous skill-position player who can be a thorn in the side of Pac-12 opponents. Mitchell, a 6'1", 192-pound athlete who showed 4.42-second speed in the 40-yard dash at The Opening, committed to Oregon last November and chose the Ducks over offers from Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State, in-state school Tennessee and other programs.

What may make Oregon followers smile brighter is the fact Mitchell said he was ready for Arlington, as he knew the team was planning a strategy to contain him.

"I sit down with my coaches every week," he said. "I know people game-plan around me, so I game-plan where I can exploit their defenses. I watch cornerbacks and safeties on film. I watch their strengths and weaknesses, and I work around them."

Of Oregon's 13 commits, Mitchell is the team's only wide receiver pledge. He said receivers coach Matt Lubick has plans of using Mitchell similarly to how Bralon Addison is currently used in Oregon's system.

"They want to move me around on offense, from X [receiver] to slot," Mitchell said. "I know I can play all positions. I feel like [Friday] can help me. I want to show [Oregon] that they can incorporate me in any offensive play."

Mitchell isn't predicting another six-touchdown game this season, but he does have a goal. It involves duplicating the feats of a future teammate.

"I remember Thomas Tyner scoring 10 touchdowns once. I want to do that," Mitchell said. "I don't know if I can get to that, but it's a personal goal."
