College Football Playoff 2015: Final 4 Predictions After Week 3 NCAA Results

Justin NeumanSep 20, 2015

What a difference a week makes in the college football landscape. Two of the four teams we picked last week to end up in the College Football Playoff lost Saturday, as the Alabama Crimson Tide lost at home to the Ole Miss Rebels and the USC Trojans also failed to defend their home turf against the Stanford Cardinal.

The lesson, as always, is that it's impossible to predict what will happen on the field, and teams that look good early in the season can have a change in fortunes as the year progresses.

As you'd expect, both the Crimson Tide and Trojans free-fell out of the Top 10. Alabama dropped to No. 12, and USC fell all the way to 19th in the AP Top 25. Because of their losses, it will be much tougher for both teams to find their way into the playoff. It can still be done, but there's a long road ahead.

Because of the shake-up, we're here with a fresh set of predictions for which teams will compete for the national title this year. Here's an updated look at the teams we think will get in:

  1. Ohio State Buckeyes
  2. TCU Horned Frogs
  3. Georgia Bulldogs
  4. Michigan State Spartans

The top two teams are carry-overs from last week, as top-ranked Ohio State held on to its spot and TCU jumped to No. 2. It will be hard to take either of these teams out until one (or both) of them loses.

The new team occupying our third spot is Georgia. For now, one would expect the SEC winner to make it into the playoff, and Georgia looks like a good bet to win its conference.

As Phil Steele pointed out, Georgia's offense has been on a roll as of late.

To say Greyson Lambert was in a groove against South Carolina would be an understatement. Not only did Lambert complete 24 of his 25 pass attempts, but as Edward Aschoff of ESPN.com pointed out, Lambert also connected on 20 straight passes, which set a school record.

Is Lambert going to be that efficient for the entire season? Probably not, but if he continues his strong play, he can make the Georgia offense dangerous.

Having Nick Chubb also helps. The sophomore running back is an early Heisman Trophy candidate, and he has arguably been the nation's best runner so far this season. His 8.4 yards per rush are good for fifth in the nation, and he has carried the ball more than any of the four players ahead of him.

Chubb can take some pressure off Lambert, and their combination of powers makes Georgia a threat in the SEC.

Rounding out the playoff pool is Michigan State. Sparty's schedule is favorable, and if the team ends the season with only one lossand if that loss is to Ohio Stateit will be hard to keep the Spartans out of the playoff.

Of course, Michigan State could also knock off the Buckeyes, which would further bolster its resume. With senior quarterback Connor Cook at the helm, the Spartans are poised to make some noise in the Big Ten.
