La Liga Table 2015 Week 4: Standings and Final Scores After Sunday

Rob BlanchetteSep 20, 2015

Barcelona skipped past Levante with ease in a 4-1 demolition at the Camp Nou to reclaim top spot in La Liga.

Despite a poor and goalless first half, strikes from Marc Bartra, Neymar and Lionel Messi (two) were enough to take the points as Levante folded.

Sevilla's shocking start to the new campaign continued as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Celta Vigo. Two early strikes by Nolito and Daniel Wass were enough to consign the Sevillistas to the bottom of the table, as Celta climb to fourth.

Sporting de Gijon won their first league match of the season, surprising unbeaten Deportivo de La Coruna at the Riazor. The visitors won a five-goal thriller at the home of Depor, prevailing 3-2.

Villarreal jumped to third in the table on Sunday, convincingly beating Athletic Bilbao 3-1. And in the day's other tie, Rayo Vallecano earned a slim 1-0 win away to Las Palmas to keep them in mid-table.

Sunday Recap

It was a successful nights work for Barcelona at the Camp Nou as they took control of the top of the table once again. The Blaugrana defeated a lame Levante 4-1 on Sunday, despite the visitors shutting out their hosts in the first half.

Bartra opened the scoring for manager Luis Enrique's side shortly after the break. The centre-back found himself as the most advanced player in attack, and he finished Messi's cross with composure and skill. It was soon 2-0 to Barca on the night as Neymar added his name to the scoresheet, squeezing a shot over the line through a barrage of defenders to claim his goal.

Messi added a third from the penalty spot before inexplicably missing a second spot-kick, blasting the ball over the bar. Levante grabbed a consolation through Victor Casadesus after a goalkeeping error from the shaky Marc-Andre ter Stegen—but Messi rounded off the game in style in the final minute, with his darting run ending in a rasping shot to claim his side's fourth.

Journalist Rafael Hernandez picked out Bartra's classy goal for special praise:

The misery at Sevilla continued on Sunday as they were beaten 2-1 by Celta Vigo in Andalusia. Nolito found the bottom corner of the net to give Celta an early lead, with Wass adding a second strike 11 minutes later to obtain his side a comfortable lead at the break.

The fight back was on in the second half as Fernando Llorente's close-range header gave the home fans hope. However, they couldn't get the vital second goal needed to claim a point despite the official showing the Sky Blues' Jonny red late in the game.

Sporting Gijon won 3-2 in a frantic match at Deportivo, with all five goals coming in the first 34 minutes of the game.

Antonio Sanabria scored twice in the opening eight minutes for Gijon, forcing the hosts to come out and attack. And within a 20-minute period Depor had drawn level 2-2 after a header from the experienced Juanfran and smart finish from Luis Alberto.

It was left to Alex Menendez to be the match-winner 11 minutes before the break, with his shot nestling in the far corner after a lethal counter-attack.

Villarreal kept up their solid early-season form with a 3-1 home win against Athletic Club, as the Yellow Submarine climbed to third in the standings.

A penalty from influential midfielder Bruno just before the break gave the Valencian team the lead, with Mario doubling the advantage midway through the second half. A fast break gave Leo Baptistao a third for the home side, killing the game off, but Aduriz's late header gave Bilbao a consolation at the death.

Rayo Vallecano took advantage of Las Palmas' inability to score at home on Sunday, edging a tight affair 1-0 in the Canary Islands. Javi Guerra grabbed the solitary strike deep into the first half which stole the result from Los Amarillos.

Barcelona are unsurprisingly back at the top of La Liga, and Enrique was able to rest a host of his stars, including Luis Suarez

Levante defended well in the first half, often thwarting the home team's pedestrian tactics, but it was a different Barca in the second half of the match.

Messi should have had a hat-trick and would have done it if he hadn't skied his penalty, but the champions are in good shape before a difficult test on the road against a strong Celta Vigo side on Wednesday.
