1 More Reason to Watch: Rebels to Bust out Powder Blues in Showdown with Alabama
Need another reason to watch Ole Miss at Alabama on Saturday?
Want another reason anyway?
Good. You came to the right place. Ole Miss announced on Friday that it will wear one of the best uniforms in college football against the Crimson Tide: its throwback powder blues.
Ole Miss wore these uniforms against Memphis last season in honor of former defensive back Chucky Mullins. Mullins was paralyzed when making a head-first tackle against Vanderbilt in 1989 and passed away two years later.
"Coach [Hugh] Freeze and I are big believers in tradition," Ole Miss athletic director Ross Bjork said when the uniforms were announced last offseason. "That's our staple. Gray pants, red or blue jerseys, white jersey on the road, traditional helmet, but in this particular case, it was about honoring Chucky."
Ole Miss wore these uniforms the year Mullins became a quadriplegic and also the season prior. That second point is relevant because in 1988, Ole Miss beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa for the first and only time in program history.
In 27 trips to Alabama, the first of which came in 1900, Ole Miss has won that one single game. When it did, it was wearing these uniforms.
Nick Saban's team better be careful.
Actually—forget that. Let's not pretend this gives Ole Miss any actual advantage. We can talk about tradition and superstition until the cows come home, but that's not what this is really about.
All this announcement concerns is the memory of Mullins and the majesty of Ole Miss' powder blues. Combine that with an all-time classic on the other sideline, Alabama's home crimson and white, and we have an early front-runner for "Best Dressed Game of the Year."
Fitting that it takes place right after New York Fashion Week.
