Vernon Adams Injury: Updates on Oregon QB's Status and Return

Alec NathanJan 2, 2016

Oregon Ducks quarterback Vernon Adams suffered head and index-finger injuries in the team's season-opening victory against the Eastern Washington Eagles on Sept. 5, and the signal-caller's season was bookended by another injury after he took an apparent helmet-to-helmet shot in the second quarter of the Alamo Bowl.

Adams Done for the Day

Saturday, Jan. 2

According to the Register-Guard's Steve Mims, Adams came out of the halftime locker room dressed in street clothes. Backup Jeff Lockie proceeded to take over for Adams, whose collegiate career is now officially over. Prior to departing Saturday's game, Adams completed 13 of 19 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown.

After appearing in moments of mop-up duty for Marcus Mariota during the 2013 and 2014 seasons, Lockie was defeated by Adams in the team's summer quarterback competition.

However, the redshirt junior is more familiar with Oregon's system than Adams after soaking up knowledge behind the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner.

"The quarterback is reading the defense and making the right choice and letting go of the ball," Oregon receivers coach Matt Lubick said Aug. 12, according to the Oregonian's Tyson Alger. "You can be the most talented guy in the world, but it's mental, and Lockie is great at that."

Lockie can provide some peace of mind, but Oregon was undoubtedly at its best this season with Adams at the controls. It's a shame his time in Eugene came to a close in such sudden fashion.
