Which Teams Hold Edge in Race for 4-Star WR Freddie Swain?

Tyler DonohueSep 9, 2015

Florida wide receiver Freddie Swain surged into the national spotlight this summer with a sensational performance at The Opening, an invite-only prospect showcase held at Nike's world headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.

The North Marion High School standout is slated to follow up his impressive offseason with a busy fall. Swain will spend time on multiple college campuses across the country and may wait to commit until after this fall.

Initial plans for a late-October announcement are no longer in place, per Ryan Bartow of 247Sports. This development coincides with an altered official visit schedule.

Swain, a 6'0", 172-pound playmaker, expects to attend games at Miami and Tennessee in October. Bartow reports USC will welcome him to Los Angeles on November 28, revising earlier intentions for a September 19 visit.

Swain traveled to Gainesville last weekend, watching the Gators' new coaching regime claim its first victory. Florida threw for nearly 400 passing yards in a 61-13 dismantling of New Mexico State.

He lives less than an hour from campus and could envision a future at Florida.

"It was good to see them air the ball out,” Swain told Andrew Spivey of GatorCountry.com. “I could definitely see myself playing here [Florida] and catching a couple of passes here. ... It was uptempo and high confidence coming from the offense."

Gators head coach Jim McElwain is attempting to revitalize an offensive attack that struggled for stretches during recent seasons. Downfield threats like Swain are the kind of talents Florida must stockpile in order to establish a reliable and explosive aerial assault.

The Gators view Swain as a top priority in the Sunshine State, and proximity puts the program in great position to host him multiple times before national signing day. Sustained offensive success would further fortify the sales pitch for Florida, a squad listed second in his 247Sports Crystal Ball.

Tennessee leads the way with 50 percent of experts' predictions. The Volunteers have assembled a quality corps of young pass-catchers in Knoxville, providing 4-star quarterback commit and Elite 11 finalist Jarrett Guarantano with a foundation for future success should he eventually claim the starting job.

Guarantano and Swain teamed up for seven-on-seven tournament action at The Opening, creating rapport that would rapidly grow if both end up in orange.

Swain journeyed to Tennessee in June and plans to return October 10 for the team's matchup with Georgia. The Volunteers' coaching staff has done an outstanding job gaining traction with him.

“The coaches are phenomenal,” Swain told Danny Parker of Scout.com. “They’re cool, we always chill. Talk on the phone a lot. The campus is beautiful. I can see myself playing there.”

Alabama is yet another potential SEC landing spot. He included the Crimson Tide among favorites during conversations at The Opening.

Head coach Nick Saban extended a scholarship offer before his junior season. Alabama is in the mix for several top-tier 2016 receivers, and Swain is among the earliest targets of that group.

We're still waiting to hear when/if Swain is headed to Tuscaloosa in the coming months. In the meantime, Alabama appears to be looking up at Florida and Tennessee in this race.

Miami provides further competition, attempting to edge out the Gators for a mutual in-state target. The Hurricanes have pieces in place for a promising passing game, highlighted by 2016 commits Jack Allison, Sam BruceDionte Mullins and Michael Irvin Jr.

The lingering question in Coral Gables surrounds an uncertain future for head coach Al Golden and his assistants. Another disappointing season could result in sweeping changes by the university.

Miami may be well on its way toward figuring out Golden's fate when Swain steps onto campus October 17. He'll watch the Hurricanes battle Virginia Tech midway through the season.

USC must now wait until Thanksgiving weekend to host Swain, but the scheduling change may ultimately prove beneficial for the Trojans. Head coach Steve Sarkisian can showcase his squad under the bright lights of a regular-season finale against rival UCLA.

The matchup may carry major implications in the Pac-12 Championship chase and College Football Playoff picture. It's also the latest visit currently on Swain's itinerary, indicating a commitment could arrive shortly afterward.

USC already boasts arguably the most impressive collection of wide receiver commits in this cycle. This group features four 4-star recruits rated as top-30 prospects at the position.

Ultimately, Swain has simple criteria for what he's looking for in a school.

"I want to feel at home and find a place where I could come in and play as a true freshman," he told B/R's Sanjay Kirpalani.

Rated 29th nationally among wide receivers in 247Sports' composite rankings, Swain enjoyed a career-best junior campaign with 52 catches for 841 yards and six scores. He opened his senior season in style, hauling in six passes for 102 yards and a touchdown during a win, per MaxPreps.
