"I would like to congratulate Wayne on becoming England's leading goalscorer. I have always been very proud to hold this record. Playing for my country was always an honour and a privilege and something I did with great pride. I obviously cannot deny that I am disappointed that I now don't hold this record, however, I am absolutely delighted that it is Wayne, as captain of my beloved club and country, who now holds this record.
On behalf of myself and everyone at Manchester United I would like to say "Congratulations Wayne this is a very proud moment for you and your family. It is a record that I am sure you will hold for a long time, and it is clear to see that you will go on scoring for your club and country for a long time to come."

Charlton was certainly not the only former England star to come out in praise of Rooney's achievement, with the man now third in the all-time goalscoring list, Gary Lineker, paying his own tribute:
Rooney's first goal for England came against Macedonia in 2003, and No. 50 was netted in his 107th appearance for his country, at 29 years old.
Such longevity and consistency commands respect, and former England skipper John Terry went as far as to name Rooney England's greatest-ever player:
A number of England's other top scorers weighed in, with retired duo Michael Owen and Alan Shearer tweeting their congratulations:
Rooney has been in mixed form of late for United, but his England performances have been impressive, and it always seemed likely that he would break the record against Switzerland, having tied with Charlton against San Marino on Saturday.
The former Everton striker has now scored in seven consecutive competitive games for England, while Opta noted another significant milestone Rooney reached with his latest strike:
Club and country teammates Michael Carrick, Phil Jones and Ashley Young all also weighed in with their own tributes for Rooney:
Meanwhile, praise was even forthcoming from Liverpool-defender-turned-pundit Jamie Carragher, who had his fair share of confrontations with Rooney in the Premier League:
Rooney's is a fantastic achievement, and while it is unlikely to win him universal appreciation, it is undoubtedly worthy of great respect, per the Times' Oliver Kay:
The man himself was clearly delighted to eclipse Charlton's record, and with years still to come in his career, he will surely go on to set the bar even higher for future England goalscorers:
England maintained their perfect record in Euro 2016 qualifying against Switzerland, the 2-0 victory making it eight wins from eight for Roy Hodgson's men.
Qualification to the France tournament is already guaranteed, and Rooney's next aim will surely be to lead England to their first major trophy for 50 years at Euro 2016.
