College Football Rankings 2015: Week 2 AP and Amway Standings Revealed
One week into the 2015 college football season has already provided plenty of change in both the Associated Press and Amway Coaches polls, though Ohio State remains a rock-solid No. 1.
While there weren't a lot of upsets in Week 1, there were enough of them and some surprising close games for top teams to give the Top 25 a makeover. Here's how both major polls look heading into the second week of action, via USA Today and AP.org:
| 1 | Ohio State (61) | Ohio State (63) |
| 2 | Alabama | Alabama (1) |
| 3 | TCU | TCU |
| 4 | Baylor | Baylor |
| 5 | Michigan State | Oregon |
| 6 | Auburn | Michigan State |
| 7 | Oregon | Auburn |
| 8 | USC | Florida State |
| 9 | Notre Dame | Georgia |
| 10 | Georgia | USC |
| 11 | Florida State | Notre Dame |
| 12 | Clemson | Clemson |
| 13 | UCLA | UCLA |
| 14 | LSU | Mississippi |
| 15 | Georgia Tech | LSU |
| 16 | Texas A&M | Georgia Tech |
| 17 | Mississippi | Oklahoma |
| 18 | Arkansas | Arkansas |
| 19 | Oklahoma | Texas A&M |
| 20 | Boise State | Arizona |
| 21 | Missouri | Missouri |
| 22 | Arizona | Boise State |
| 23 | Tennessee | Tennessee |
| 24 | Utah | Wisconsin |
| 25 | Mississippi State | Utah |
The Buckeyes are the biggest story in college football right now, especially after that 42-24 win over Virginia Tech. They started slowly, trailing 17-14 at halftime, but went on a 28-7 run in the second half to extend their winning streak to 14 games.
It's also the sixth consecutive game Ohio State has scored at least 42 points. Cardale Jones got the start at quarterback, but it was former quarterback-current playmaker extraordinaire Braxton Miller who stole the show.
Playing in his first game since 2013, Miller wound up with 140 total yards and two touchdowns, including this ridiculous video game spin move:
Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott, who "only" had 122 rushing yards after ending last year with three straight 200-yard performances, said after the win why the rest of the country should be afraid of what it saw on Monday, via ESPN.com's Andrea Adelson:
"We were missing guys and we still just had so many weapons on the field today. We get some guys back next week and I know we can all improve on our play. We're very raw right now. First game of the season, that's what you expect but we have so much we can improve on. That's a scary thing. We could be very dominant.
"
There's a reason the Buckeyes started this season as the first unanimous No. 1 in the preseason AP poll, and it was on full display in the road game against Virginia Tech.
TCU started the season No. 2 in both polls, but an unimpressive 23-17 victory over Minnesota has already caused some of the voters to have a change of heart. Alabama, which got a solid win over a ranked Wisconsin team, was the beneficiary of those changes, moving into the second spot.
Surprisingly, the polls did not punish Oregon for its lackluster effort against Eastern Washington. The Ducks did secure a 19-point win and put up 61 points, but allowing 42 points and 549 total yards to a Big Sky opponent doesn't speak well of where the defense is at.
It will be very interesting to see what Oregon looks like this week on the road against a Top Five opponent in Michigan State.
The highest-ranked team to lose was Arizona State, which fell out of the polls after being ranked 15th by the AP and 16th by the coaches in the preseason. The Sun Devils were dominated in a 38-17 loss at Texas A&M, giving the Aggies renewed enthusiasm and a jump into the top 20.
Sticking with the SEC, since that's the conference everyone either loves or loves to hate, the additions of Texas A&M and Mississippi State in the AP poll make it the first conference to put 10 teams in the Top 25, per Brandon Zimmerman of the SEC Network:
On the flip side, the Pac-12 lost two teams from the polls with Stanford joining Arizona State on the outside after losing to Northwestern.
Looking ahead to where the changes could come next week, the Oregon-Michigan State game is an obvious starting point. The Ducks won that matchup at home last year, but they don't have Marcus Mariota under center anymore.
LSU gets thrown into the fire after last week's game against McNeese State was cancelled because of bad weather. The Tigers will play SEC rival Mississippi State, which just arrived in the polls. Dak Prescott led the Bulldogs to their first win over LSU in 23 years last season.
Another litmus-test game features Oklahoma taking on Tennessee. Both teams are in the Top 25 but sit in the back half and are trying to re-establish themselves as a national power. A win for either on this stage should provide a good jump-start for the rest of this season.
