The Buckeyes were impressive in a 42-24 prime-time victory over the Hokies as quarterback Cardale Jones played solidly after being named the starter over J.T. Barrett, while Braxton Miller excelled following his switch to wide receiver.
There was concern among many observers entering the season that Ohio State's talent at quarterback would be a detriment to head coach Urban Meyer, but it seemed to work out well for him in the opener.
According to Larry Beil of KGO-TV in San Francisco, the Buckeyes have an embarrassment of riches at the most important position on the field:
OSU has been viewed as the odds-on favorite to win it all ever since taking the national title last season, and Mike Greenberg of ESPN's Mike & Mike doesn't believe that has changed, with Miller's incredible play against Virginia Tech serving as a prime example why:
Although the Buckeyes have all of the makings of being repeat national champs, it is far from a lock as three other quality teams will make the College Football Playoff as well.
TCU could be among them as the Horned Frogs survived a tough road test against Minnesota. They escaped with a 23-17 victory, which prompted the voters to drop them from No. 2 in the polls to No. 3.
Some are down on the Frogs since they didn't win in blowout fashion, but ESPN's Ryen Russillo isn't pushing the panic button yet:
Quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Trevone Boykin threw for just 246 yards, one touchdown and one interception, although he added 92 yards and another score on the ground.
Per Andy Greder of the Pioneer Press, TCU was given some credit by the New York Post for challenging itself in its opener:
Alabama is another team that faced a ranked opponent in the form of Wisconsin, but the Crimson Tide were in firm control throughout.
The defense and running back Derrick Henry led the way as T.J. Yeldon's replacement rushed for 147 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-17 triumph over the Badgers in Tuscaloosa.
Alabama leaped from No. 3 to No. 2, and ESPN's Skip Bayless believes it is Ohio State's closest competition after just one week of play:
Baylor, Michigan State, Auburn, Oregon and USC held steady at No. 4 through No. 8 after picking up wins in their first outings of the season, while Notre Dame was the most notable mover as it jumped two spots from No. 11 to No. 9 after throttling Texas 38-3.
Also, Texas A&M went from being unranked to securing the No. 16 position after impressively defeating previously ranked Arizona State 38-17.
According to Ralph D. Russo of the Associated Press, the SEC continued its college football dominance by placing more teams in the Top 25 at one time than any conference in history:
"Another record for the SEC: 10 teams ranked in the latest AP poll, including entire West. http://t.co/JMUAXEWDSJ

The majority of the highly touted teams in the country found a way to win over the past week, but the level of competition will get much tougher for most as the 2015 campaign wears on.
Even so, there is little doubt Ohio State is well out in front of everyone else. Luckily for the rest of the field, it must only clinch a top-four spot by the end of the season in order to have a shot at the championship.
Based on the earliest of returns, though, taking down the Buckeyes in order to win it all will be a titanic task for whoever is faced with it.
