Manchester United Reportedly Preparing Monster Bid

Friday, Aug. 28

Kyle Lynch of Pro Soccer Talk cited a report in Dutch outlet De Telegraaf that states United manager Louis van Gaal could have as much as $112 million to spend on one player before the transfer window closes, and Lynch claimed he could use that to land Robben. The Express added (h/t the Telegraph) that interest in a potential reunion between player and manager is apparently mutual.

The 31-year-old attacking wizard previously played for the veteran Dutch boss with both Bayern and the Netherlands national team. His continued success with the Bavarians makes him an intriguing target for a Red Devils squad seeking more consistency in the final third.

Normally, this is a situation where it would be fair to chalk it up as crazy speculation late in the transfer window. While that may still be the case, there are at least a couple of reasons why Bayern might at least consider moving Robben.

The first is the emergence of Douglas Costa. The 24-year-old Brazilian has been nothing short of outstanding in his early Bayern appearances. Though it's a small sample size, it's hard to imagine sending his explosiveness on the wing to the bench once Franck Ribery returns from injury.

Then, there's the money. The rumored possible bid of over $100 million is hard to ignore. Even though Robben continues to showcase terrific form, it's hard to imagine his value staying at that level for much longer given his age.

United could certainly benefit from a stabilizing force on the attack. Having worked with Van Gaal in the past, the Dutch star would know exactly what's expected from him right away and could bolster a lineup that's tallied just two goals in three league matches.

All told, it's unlikely a deal of this magnitude will go down so late in the transfer window. Bayern are likely to contend for multiple trophies this term, and Robben is a key piece of the puzzle. But he could make a massive impact at United too.
