Everything CFP Committee Chair Said About Notre Dame, Ohio State, Alabama, More After 1st Rankings
The first College Football Playoff rankings were revealed on Tuesday, and naturally, there were a few decisions to be explained by the committee.
One of the biggest ones had to do with Notre Dame, which was ranked No. 11 despite having just one loss. Hunter Yurachek, a member of the committee, said it was due to a lack of a big win.
"They don't have that signature win right now. They lost in their only Top 25 matchup so far," Yurachek said on the ESPN rankings show.
Alabama was ranked eight spots ahead of Tennessee, despite being blown out by the Vols just over two weeks ago. That decision came down to the Crimson Tide's resume.
"To compare teams head to head, they have to be in the same pod," Yurachek said.
Similar to Alabama and Tennessee, Indiana was ranked eight spots higher than Ohio State despite losing to the Buckeyes. Yurachek explained that Ohio State's double-digit loss to USC last week led to the drastic discrepancy.
"I think the committee still has a lot of respect for Ohio State and who they are as a football team this year, and they do have a very impressive win on the road at Indiana that came down to a wire to a catch in the end zone that would just miss by inches, but they didn't look like the same Ohio State team this past weekend against Southern Cal," Yurachek said.
Yurachek also said that the committee isn't penalizing Ohio State for quarterback Julian Sayin's injury.
"Ohio State is not being penalized for having a quarterback that's out there, they're being evaluated as a team with another quarterback in the lineup for them," he said.
There is no stopping fans from overreacting to the first College Football Playoff ranking, but it's worth noting how different these rankings could look next week.
Notre Dame will face Miami on Saturday, and a win over the Hurricanes at home would surely put the Fighting Irish right among the top teams in college football in next week's ranking.
Alabama has a tough matchup against LSU this week, and a third loss for the Crimson Tide would give the committee no choice but to demote them out of the top-12.
If Tennessee handles business against No. 6 Kentucky, the Vols could very well jump their rival Alabama in the next rankings.
There are plenty of other matchups with CFP implications, like BYU's matchup with Utah, Texas' game against Missouri and Ole Miss' battle with Georgia.
It's safe to say the rankings will shift some over the next week, and could look completely different at the end of the season.
