Russell Wilson Interviews for NC State HC Job, Latest Rumors on NFL Icon Amid Philip Rivers Buzz

Former NFL star Russell Wilson interviewed for NC State's head coaching role on Tuesday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Wilson previously played three seasons for the Wolfpack from 2008-10.

He isn't the only former NFL quarterback competing for NC State's vacancy, as CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz previously reported that there's "continued momentum" towards the school hiring Philip Rivers.

Rivers also suited up for the Wolfpack from 2000-03.

He currently coaches at St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama and has informed NC State that he wants to finish the current high school season before potentially moving to the college level, per ESPN.

The Wolfpack started their search for a new face to patrol the sidelines after Dave Doeren was fired as head coach following a 3-4 start to the 2026 season. Todd Goebbel serves as the school's interim coach.

As for Wilson, he spent his first three years with the Wolfpack in college before joining Wisconsin. He threw for 8,545 yards during his tenure at NC State, while his 76 passing touchdowns rank No. 2 on the team's all-time leaderboard.

Wilson was eventually selected by the Seattle Seahawks with a third-round pick in the 2012 NFL draft, earning 10 Pro Bowl nods and capturing a Super Bowl title throughout his playing career.

The 37-year-old appeared in six games for the New York Giants during his 2025 campaign before announcing his retirement after the season came to a close.

Now, Wilson operates as an NFL analyst for CBS Sports.
