Tenerife announced Tuesday that forward Jesús de Miguel died at the age of 30 due to injuries he suffered in Monday's 2-2 draw with FC Andorra.
"Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda," the club said (via BBC Sport).
"There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can lessen this overwhelming sadness. We stand with his grieving family, with his loved ones, with all of Tenerife who mourn this cruel loss today."
De Miguel came on as a substitute in the 59th minute of the match. With Tenerife attempting to score a late winner, he collided with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono while tracking a long pass.
Trainers immediately tended to De Miguel on the pitch, and he was transported away by an ambulance to be treated for chest and head injuries. The referee brought the match to a halt given the severity of the situation.
Tenerife initially described De Miguel's status as "stable" but said Tuesday his "medical condition has deteriorated neurologically."
De Miguel was in his second season with Tenerife, having signed with the club from Castellón in July 2025. He had scored 11 goals in 36 appearances.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced it's suspending all matches Tuesday, while UEFA said it will hold a moment of silence before its fixtures this week.
"We are heartbroken by the death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda," UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin said in a statement. "We have searched for words and found only silence. In that silence, our hearts and thoughts are with his family, his teammates, everyone at CD Tenerife, and all those who mourn this tragic loss."
