Cowboys Legend Jason Witten Reportedly Named Oklahoma's Play-Caller After Ben Arbuckle Fired as OC
Former Dallas Cowboys legend Jason Witten is moving up the ranks in his coaching career.
According to Nick Kosko of On3.com, Witten was promoted from Oklahoma's tight ends coach to offensive play-caller following the firing of offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle on Monday.
Kosko explained that before joining Oklahoma's coaching staff ahead of the 2026 season, Witten served as the head football coach of Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas, leading the team to consecutive Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools state championships in 2023 and 2024. The 44-year-old played 16 of his 17 NFL seasons with the Cowboys and was an 11-time Pro Bowler.
Witten is taking over a Sooners offense that ranks last in the SEC in yards per game (321.3) and second-to-last in points per game (22.0). Arbuckle was in his second season as Oklahoma's offensive coordinator after helping to lead the team to the College Football Playoff last year. He and quarterback John Mateer had left Washington State together to join the Sooners. Unfortunately, he failed to bring out the best in the senior signal-caller this year, as Mateer has thrown seven interceptions in eight games.
Oklahoma most recently suffered a 42-25 loss to South Carolina on Saturday, dropping to 4-4 this season.
Witten's promotion could inject some new life into the Sooners' struggling offense, but if things don't turn around quickly, the team could be in danger of being left out of the bowl games.
Oklahoma will try to get back on track when it faces No. 25 Florida later this week.
