Mike Norvell Reacts to FSU's Negated Hail Mary and Wild Final Play of 2OT Loss to No. 3 Miami
Florida State's thrilling upset attempt against third-ranked and arch-rival Miami fell just short on Saturday evening as the Hurricanes prevailed 43-35 in double overtime at home.
The final two plays did not go FSU's way.
First, FSU appeared to have scored a touchdown on 4th-and-21 from the 36 when quarterback Ashton Daniels found wide receiver Micahi Danzy in the end zone, but FSU left tackle Xavier Chaplin was penalized for holding.
FSU then launched another Hail Mary attempt. Daniels heaved the ball to the end zone at wideout Duce Robinson, and he and defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald competed for the pigskin. Officials ultimately ruled that Fitzgerald got the interception, and a review upheld the decision.
After the game, FSU head coach Mike Norvell was asked about the final two plays. In short, he isn't pleased with either call.
Per Warchant.com, Norvell was referring to FSU's 20-13 road loss at Stanford in his comments regarding the officiating crew.
In that game, FSU running back Gavin Sawchuk was ruled just short of the goal line on an untimed down, a decision confirmed upon review.
It's undoubtedly a tough loss for the Seminoles, who have now dropped to 10-21 in the last two-plus years since 2023, when FSU was controversially left out of the then four-team College Football Playoff after a 13-0 season.
Florida State will now look to get to .500 after a bye week when the team hosts Clemson on Halloween.
