BYU held an early edge in Saturday's contest, leading 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Notre Dame jumped in front near the start of the second, as Nolan James Jr. picked up an eight-yard rushing touchdown.

The Cougars found the end zone on each of their next two drives to take a 21-10 lead, though.

Notre Dame drove into BYU's red zone towards the end of the first half, but Carr fumbled while attempting to spike the ball and prevented his squad from scoring.

The Cougars maintained a 21-10 edge at halftime.

BYU started to make mistakes in the third quarter, beginning with a muffed punt that set up Notre Dame for a field goal.

The Cougars then attempted a fake punt at their own 28-yard line during their next possession, which was stopped by the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame followed it up with another field goal, cutting the deficit to 21-16.

BYU's offense failed to respond, resulting in a lead change after the Fighting Irish marched down the field and scored with a three-yard rushing touchdown by Jonaz Walton.

Cougars quarterback Bear Bachmeier was picked off on the team's next possession, but BYU's defense forced a Notre Dame punt.

Bachmeier capitalized on his second opportunity by leading his team on a 10-play, 55-yard drive that was capped off by a short touchdown pass to Walker Lyons.

Notre Dame drove down to BYU's eight-yard line on its final possession, but couldn't score before time expired to seal the final result.
