Alabama may have caught a break, losing on one of the most upset-heavy days of the college football season. No. 1 Georgia and No. 7 Texas both fell to unranked opponents, while No. 5 Indiana suffered its first loss of the season and Mississippi State fell to lower-ranked LSU.
The loss marks Alabama's second of the season, following a 20-17 defeat against Georgia last week, as the Crimson Tide fall in back-to-back games.
The AP Top 25 poll will certainly see a drastic shift in rankings, with Alabama potentially falling out of the top 10 amid big wins from lower-ranked Ole Miss, LSU and Texas Tech.
The first half was full of chaos between the Crimson Tide and Volunteers.
Alabama was held scoreless in the first quarter, committing two turnovers โ a sack-fumble and an interception โ in a disastrous opening quarter for Russell.
Meanwhile, Tennessee kicked field goals on its first three possessions to take a 9-0 lead.
The second quarter was just as turbulent, this time with the Volunteers suffering from the same miscues.
After three straight punts, MacIntyre threw an interception at Tennessee's own 28-yard line, which Alabama turned into a score on the very next play, with Russell rushing up the middle for a touchdown.
The Volunteers answered with their fourth field goal of the first half before forcing Alabama to punt on fourth-and-4.ย
On the punt return, Tennessee's returner could not pick the ball up in a crowd of Crimson, giving Alabama possession on the Volunteers' 23-yard line. Alabama returned the favor, fumbling on fourth-and-1 on its next possession.
Bama added a field goal before the end of the second quarter to trail 12-10 at halftime.
The second half was much cleaner for both teams, as Tennessee's DeSean Bishop ran in a 5-yard touchdown to give the Volunteers a 19-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
A fourth-quarter touchdown, Bishop's second of the game, and Russell's second interception sealed the outcome as Tennessee walked away with a 16-point win.
Alabama will host the Texas A&M Aggies next Saturday, while Tennessee hits the road to face the South Carolina Gamecocks. Both games are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff.
