Steve Sarkisian's Texas Contract Buyout, Details Revealed After Upset Loss to Florida

With No. 7 Texas suffering a 27-24 upset loss to Florida on Saturday, Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian's job security will be murky as long as the team continues to struggle.

Potentially moving on from Sarkisian would be costly, though.

He has a $50.9 million buyout in his contract, via The Two Deep.

Sarkisian previously signed an extension with the school that kept him under contract through the 2031 season in Jan. 2025.

The Longhorns entered the 2026 season with high expectations and appeared to be a top threat to capture a national title after they opened the year with a perfect 4-0 record. The strong start included impressive victories over Ohio State and Tennessee.

Texas sat at No. 1 in the Week 4 AP Top 25 poll.

The Longhorns then suffered a surprising 27-24 defeat against Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry on Oct. 10 before dropping their second consecutive game on Saturday.

Sarkisian's offense struggled against a Florida defense that has allowed 393.0 total yards per game this season, the worst mark in the SEC.

Texas only recorded 272 yards and 13 first downs against the Gators. The Longhorns also converted just two of 10 opportunities on third down.

Texas quarterback Arch Manning finished 14-of-20 for 173 yards and one touchdown while losing a fumble.

Sarkisian wasn't pleased with his team's performance.

"I have to evaluate everything," Sarkisian said after the game, per Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News. "This will be a long night. Everything means everything."

Texas now owns a 4-2 record with a 1-2 mark against the SEC, sitting at No. 11 in the conference standings.
