Julian Sayin Injured, Latest Updates on Ohio State QB's Status After Exit vs. Indiana

Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin will miss multiple weeks after landing on his shoulder following a hit in the fourth quarter of Saturday's 19-15 win over Indiana, head coach Ryan Day revealed after the game.

"I don't have a ton of details, but he'll probably be out for several weeks," Day told reporters (h/t Fox's Trey Wallace). "So, we'll have to come up with a plan there."

Sayin left the game before returning to the sideline with no helmet and his right arm in a sling.

Quarterback Luke Fahey came in to replace Sayin with seven and a half minutes left in the game. No. 4 Ohio State held a 19-15 lead over No. 5 Indiana at the time.

Fahey did not complete a pass on two attempts. He also lost two yards on two carries.

Indiana had a shot at extending the team's 22-game winning streak when Josh Hoover attempted a touchdown pass from fourth and four with just over a minute remaining, but wide receiver Nick Marsh was ruled out of bounds on the potential game-winning catch.

Ohio State is scheduled for a Week 8 bye before returning Oct. 31 for a road game against USC.

The Buckeyes could be heading into that matchup with a quarterback depth chart led by Fahey, a true freshman, and Tavien St. Clair, who is in his second season with the program and competed with Fahey for the backup job earlier this season.

Buckeyes wideout Jeremiah Smith said he felt the upcoming bye could help him build chemistry with Fahey by Ohio State's next game.

"Two weeks 'til we play a game, so it's going to take time to build that," Smith told reporters Saturday (h/t Cleveland.com's Stephen Means). "I ain't going to say it's going to take one day. It's not that easy."

Sayin had started all six games of Ohio State's 5-1 start, completing 71.2 percent of his passes with 1,772 passing yards and 17 touchdowns with two picks.

He struggled early in Saturday's matchup against Indiana, going 15-for-29 with 235 yards and throwing multiple interceptions for the second straight game prior to his injury.

Hoover, who also saw mixed results in Saturday's loss, missed one play earlier in the game after landing on his right shoulder in the third quarter. Indiana will hope to get better news about his health before the Hoosiers' matchup at Michigan next weekend.
