Big Ten Reveals Officiating Error After Penalty Near End of Oregon's Upset Loss vs. UCLA

After UCLA upset Oregon on Saturday, the Big Ten revealed a costly officiating error late in the game.

With just over two minutes remaining in the game, with UCLA leading 17-15, the Ducks attempted a two-point conversion and came up short. Before the play, a facemask penalty was called on the Bruins, and the officials incorrectly spotted the ball.

It's impossible to say whether the outcome of the game would have been different if the officials had spotted the ball correctly, but Oregon would have had a much better chance to convert the two-point conversion and tie things up late.

The Ducks got the stop they needed on the following drive, but UCLA forced a fumble on Oregon's final drive to seal the win.

Oregon, which previously lost to Oklahoma State, has been without starting quarterback Dante Moore since he suffered a concussion against USC on Sept. 26. The veteran was certainly missed as the Ducks produced just 199 passing yards and had two interceptions.

But despite being without their starting quarterback, plus an officiating error, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning didn't make excuses after the loss.

"We didn't have a lot of rhythm on offense; defensively, we gave up way too many explosives, some poor eye discipline, not winning at the point of attack," Lanning told reporters. "Our guys are much more capable of that, so all that starts with me. I didn't prepare our guys well enough."

The Ducks dropped to 3-2 with the loss, and their College Football Playoff hopes took a massive hit. The Bruins, meanwhile, improved to 5-0 and picked up their first ranked win of the year as they continue a magical turnaround season.

Oregon is still alive in the Playoff race, but it will need to be nearly perfect the rest of the way to make the CFP.
