Kentucky Fined for Fans Storming Field After Upset Win vs. Lane Kiffin's LSU, Tigers to Get $500K
Kentucky extended its winning streak to five with a thrilling 35-34 overtime victory over LSU on Saturday, but it ended up being a costly result for the program.
David Ubben of The Athletic reported Sunday the SEC fined Kentucky $500,000 because its fans stormed the field following the upset of Lane Kiffin's squad. The conference changed its "access to competition area" rule last year, which means the fine will go directly to the Tigers.
The SEC first started fining programs for storming the field in 2004 but changed the rule in 2025 to make the penalty $500,000 regardless of the sport and whether there were multiple offenses.
"The motivation was 'field rushing is field rushing, the first time or the 18th time,'" SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said, per Ubben.
While the Wildcats were punished, it likely does little to dampen spirits in Kentucky following such a dramatic win. Despite missing two field goals earlier in the game, Adam Zouagui connected on a kick in the final seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime.
From there, LSU scored a touchdown first when Sam Leavitt ran it in from 15 yards out to give the visitors the lead. However, Kentucky responded right back when CJ Baxter found the end zone on a one-yard run.
Rather than kick the extra point and go into a second overtime, the Wildcats decided to go for two. And quarterback Kenny Minchey took advantage of the opportunity when he kept it on a draw play and scored for the conversion.
It was the second consecutive week Kentucky went for two after a touchdown in overtime to win the game by the exact score of 35-34. It did so against South Carolina as well, and Minchey found Willie Rodriguez for the two-point conversion to win it that time.
The Wildcats are now 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC following the last two wins. While they still have road games against Tennessee, Oklahoma and Missouri, as well as home games against Florida and Louisville, they are in position to compete for the College Football Playoff as the season progresses.
Of course, that may lead to some more field storming as well.
