CFP Playoff Bracket, Scenarios and Bowl Projections After 2026-27 Week 7 AP Rankings
The Georgia Bulldogs are the new top team in the AP Top 25.
Georgia's win over the Alabama Crimson Tide combined with the Texas Longhorns' defeat to the Oklahoma Sooners caused the shift at the top of the Week 7 rankings.
The 6-0 Bulldogs are on top for now, but they still have a tricky SEC schedule to navigate in order to confirm a spot in the College Football Playoff.
Due to Texas' loss, Georgia is the only SEC team in the top five. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Miami Hurricanes, Ohio State Buckeyes and Indiana Hoosiers fill out the top five in that order.
Ohio State and Indiana will play for the top spot in the Big Ten in Week 7. That's one of two top-10 matchups to look forward to on Saturday as well as Notre Dame's battle with the BYU Cougars.
Georgia Sits On Top For First Time This Season
1 of 3
Georgia moved up one spot from No. 2 to claim its first week atop the AP poll.
Gunner Stockton and Co. went into Tuscaloosa to pick up their first big win of the 2026 campaign.
As of now, Georgia has the chance to pick up two more Top 25 wins in SEC play against the No. 9 Ole Miss Rebels and the No. 13 Missouri Tigers.
UGA's schedule looks easier than the upcoming run of games for the likes of Texas and Ohio State.
The schedule and the way Georgia handled its win at Alabama suggest the Bulldogs should be the favorite to claim one of the four first-round byes in the CFB Playoff.
A spot in the SEC Championship Game is the minimum expectation, but it would come as no surprise to see UGA on the finalized top four seed lines come December.
Texas Tumbles To No. 7
2 of 3
Arch Manning and Texas tumbled down to No. 7 following their last-second loss to Oklahoma.
Texas was unable to squeeze out another close win, like it did against Ohio State and Tennessee.
Texas is 4-1 with a pair of top-15 wins, but there has to be at least a slight bit of concern about the Longhorns' playoff hopes.
Steve Sarkisian's team plays Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri and LSU in its next five games.
The first three of those games take place in Austin, which should aid Texas' chances of getting through October with one loss.
Texas is capable of going 5-0 or 4-1 in that stretch and preserving a spot in the CFB Playoff, and potentially the SEC Championship Game.
The Longhorns can't afford two losses in that stretch, though, because getting in as a three-loss team, even from the SEC, could be tough.
Stage Set For Two Top 10 Clashes in Week 7
3 of 3
Two top-10 clashes in Week 7 will have significant CFB Playoff ramifications.
The first of the two takes place in Bloomington, as Ohio State fights Indiana for Big Ten supremacy.
Ohio State and Indiana are two of four Big Ten teams left without a loss in league play. Indiana and the UCLA Bruins are the only programs with full undefeated records in the Big Ten.
The OSU-Indiana winner will be a front-runner to land a first-round bye in the CFB Playoff.
If Ohio State loses, it then puts its playoff life on thin ice because it would then have to defeats to Texas and Indiana.
Notre Dame's trip to BYU is likely more about the Cougars' playoff prospects.
The Fighting Irish have been a machine through six games. They have six double-digit wins and have scored at least 37 points in five of their six contests.
BYU sits on top of the Big 12, but it hasn't faced a ranked opponent yet in five games.
The Cougars are one of three playoff contenders in the Big 12, along with Texas Tech and Utah.
If BYU pulls off the win at home, it has a case to be a top-five team, and it will significantly shake up the rankings.
After six weeks, the assumption is Notre Dame will join Georgia, Miami and the Big Ten champion as the four teams with first-round byes.
