Everything Lane Kiffin Said After LSU's Stunning OT Loss vs. Kentucky Drops Record to 4-2
Lane Kiffin and LSU came into the season as presumed College Football Playoff contenders, but they're now 4-2 after an upset loss to Kentucky in overtime.
Kiffin's immediate reaction to the loss was his team's lack of execution. He specifically noted a punt that the Wildcats returned for a touchdown to take the lead in the second quarter.
"If you don't execute, you don't execute," Kiffin told reporters. "The punt return, you got a player there tackling him and doesn't tackle him, and he goes outside and, you know, on the long run, he swooped out of a gap and the ball goes for a long run. If you don't do fundamentally sound stuff, you get exposed versus good teams."
The Tigers' lack of execution was mostly on the defensive side. Kentucky's CJ Baxter rushed for 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Quarterback Kenny Minchey threw for 246 yards and practically walked into the end zone on the Wildcats' two-point conversion in overtime.
Kentucky gave LSU plenty of chances to win late. The Wildcats missed what would have been a game-tying field goal in the final minutes, but the Tigers couldn't get the first down needed to ice the game.
"When the chance comes in the fourth quarter, you can't let 'em hang around," Kiffin told reporters. "We had the ball ahead and then we turned the ball over. And another chance to end it there so they don't get it back. Obviously, things go the other way, you look at yourself first."
That allowed Kentucky to march down the field and get another chance to tie it, and they took advantage of it and sent the game to overtime.
LSU was mostly sound on offense. Sam Leavitt threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns, though he threw an interception and fumbled the ball once.
The Tigers' season is still salvageable, but the loss makes their path to the CFP much harder. LSU still has to face Mississippi State, Alabama, Texas and Tennessee, all ranked teams, and it will likely need to win out to be one of the last 12 teams standing.
"This goes on all of us," Kiffin said. "We had all kinds of chances to close the game out and win the game, and didn't do it. You let people hang around on the road at night in the SEC, that's gonna happen."
