Pitt backup quarterback Holden Geriner started in place of QB1 Mason Heintschel, who suffered a torn ACL in his right knee last Friday in a 35-33 win over Virginia Tech and will miss the remainder of the season.
The Panthers' offense looked good early. Pitt opened the game with a 75-yard touchdown drive capped by running back La'Vell Wright's two-yard rush. Antonio Chadha later added a 41-yard field goal in the second quarter to cap a seven-minute drive and give Pitt a 10-0 lead.
However, UNC immediately responded with a touchdown. Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. hit tight end Jelani Thurman for a seven-yard score.
Neither team scored until near the end of the third quarter, when UNC running back Demon June punched it in from one yard out. After the PAT, UNC led 14-10 with 22 seconds left in the third quarter.
Pitt punched back with a 75-yard touchdown drive capped by Wright's second touchdown, this time from one yard out.
However, UNC only needed one play from scrimmage to take the lead back. Edwards hit tight end Shamar Easter up the seam for a 75-yard touchdown pass, and that ended up being good enough for the win.
Pitt had four possessions after Easter's touchdown, but they combined for just 49 yards and ended in a punt and three turnovers on downs.
UNC will visit arch-rival Duke on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET. Pitt will head to Boston College next Saturday at noon.
