New Kyrie Irving Trade Rumors on Pistons' Interest in Pairing Alongside Cade Cunningham
The Detroit Pistons reportedly could have their sights set on adding a dynamic and accomplished guard to play alongside Cade Cunningham.
According to ESPN's Vincent Goodwill, multiple Pistons staffers are "fond" of Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving's "game, shot creation and malleability," particularly while teaming with fellow star players such as LeBron James and Luka Dončić.
Irving, 34, missed the entire 2025-26 season while recovering from a torn ACL, and the 2026-27 campaign could be his final year under contract, as he has a player option for 2027-28.

Because of that, the Mavs could conceivably look to move Irving prior to the 2026-27 trade deadline if they aren't showing marked improvement from the 26-56 record they posted last season.
Detroit would potentially be an excellent fit for Kyrie due to the possibility of contending for a championship with the Pistons, while teaming up with a pair of All-Stars in Cunningham and Jalen Duren.
A nine-time All-Star in his own right, Irving won his first and only NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 alongside LeBron.
After stints with the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets, Irving returned to the NBA Finals in 2024, as he and Dončić lifted the Mavs before ultimately falling to the Celtics.
The Pistons had the best record in the Eastern Conference last season at 60-22, but they could not make it past the second round of the playoffs, falling in seven games to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Detroit is returning most of the same key players it had last season, so if there is any drop-off in terms of their regular-season play, perhaps shaking things up by adding a player of Kyrie's caliber could be in the cards.
If so, a "Big 3" of Cunningham, Duren and Irving could help the Pistons rival the stacked starting lineups of the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers in the East.
