Lane Kiffin Uses Viral Fake Quote From Kentucky QB in Photo to Motivate LSU for SEC Matchup
Athletes and coaches have been using slights, real or imagined, as motivation for almost as long as sports have been around.
And it seems like LSU head coach Lane Kiffin is using an imagined slight ahead of Saturday's game against Kentucky.
It appears as if Kiffin and the Tigers have a quote from Wildcats quarterback Kenny Minchey that says, "LSU's defense hasn't seen anyone like us and our offensive line yet," on their video boards in the facility:
The only problem is, Minchey never said that. Adam Luckett of On 3 confirmed he never said as much, but it seems like the Tigers are still using it as motivation.
This isn't the first time Kiffin and LSU decided to use an opposing player's quote as motivation ahead of a game.ย
He also did so before the matchup with Ole Miss, using a quote from wide receiver Deuce Alexander that said the game was going to be a "bloodbath."
The difference, of course, is that Alexander actually said that. It also likely wasn't hard to get motivated for that matchup with the Rebels considering it was one of the most highly anticipated ones of the season with Kiffin's new team facing his old one.
Ole Miss ended up winning that game, so perhaps a fake quote will work better for Kiffin and Co. when the Tigers face Kentucky.
Facing Minchey will not be easy, so some additional motivation could help. He has completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 1,148 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception on the season and just put on a show during a dramatic 35-34 overtime victory over South Carolina the last time out.
He threw for 272 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions and converted a two-point attempt to win it on the final play.
Both Kentucky and LSU are 4-1 heading into Saturday's matchup. The winner will move up in the SEC standings and still be in the middle of the College Football Playoff race, while the loser will be staring at an uphill battle to get back into those types of postseason discussions.
LSU seems to be pulling out all the stops, including using fake quotes.
