New York Knicks vs. Philadelphia 76ers Live NBA Preseason Updates, Scores and Highlights

The New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers open their 2026 preseason against one another on Monday night at 7 p.m. EST inside Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Put another way: NBA basketball really is back.

Granted, it's not back for everyone. The Sixers already ruled out a slew of key players, including LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Anfernee Simons, Dominick Barlow and Adem Bona.

Even so, this preseason tilt is dripping with intrigue. Among the biggest storylines we need to monitor:

  • Jaylen Brown is making his Sixers debut. Does he come out with the intensity of a highly caffeinated Joe Mazzulla?
  • Jalen Brunson is playing for the first time since offseason wrist surgery. Is the reigning Finals MVP close to regular-season form?
  • VJ Edgecombe will take on a bigger role. Injuries and absences are part of the Sixers experience. How much ball-handling responsibility will he have without LeBron or Maxey in the fold?
  • The Knicks' chemistry amid increasingly awkward extension talks. Karl-Anthony Towns said on Monday "It don't look good" when asked about getting a deal done. Josh Hart and Miles McBride are extension eligible, too. Will this be a distraction on and off the court...starting now?
  • Center rotations. With Tacko Fall also out, the Sixers' only center suiting up is Ariel Hukporti. So, er, get ready to play the 5...Dean Wade? The Knicks, meanwhile, brought three guys into training camp to fill their third-string center hole: Tony Bradley, Drew Eubanks and James Wiseman. Tonight's performance could go a long way toward one of them locking down a roster spot.

This is just a taste of what we will see and talk about. Keep it locked here for all the live updates, analysis and marquee moments you can handle!

Philly is Already Showing Jaylen Brown Some Love

Jaylen Brown received quite the reception from Philly fans during his first player intro as a member of the Sixers. I'd say it was no worse than the seventh-best round of applause of the evening so far.

LeBron James Really Plays for the 76ers...

LeBron may not be suiting up against the Knicks, but for anyone who might've forgotten or is tired of pinching themselves to see whether they're dreaming, this serves as a good reminder that James really, actually signed with the Sixers.

Karl-Anthony Towns isn't Acting Like Someone without an Extension

Karl-Anthony Towns' future will cast a cloud over the team if, as the big man currently expects, he doesn't reach an extension with the Knicks. There will be no avoiding the questions and speculation should he play out the season in advance of a 2027-28 player option.

Still, in the face of could-be contentious negotiations, Towns doesn't appear to be carrying himself like someone plotting to leave. That's good news for the Knicks and their fans, and a reminder that spreadsheet calculations don't always impact how players comport themselves around their teammates.

VJ Edgecombe is Starting at Point Guard

With Tyrese Maxey, LeBron James and Anfernee Simons all sitting out Monday night, the Sixers are tapping VJ Edgecombe run the offense.

Jaylen Brown will take on a large share of creation responsibilities as well, but this is valuable data collection for both Philly and its sophomore. Though beginning games at the 1 won't become Edgecombe's routine, successful performances under circumstances like this could reshape how head coach Nick Nurse builds his secondary units.

The Knicks are Playing (Almost) Everybody

It sounds like we're going to get a nearly full look at the Knicks' rotation to open the preseason.

Jose Alvarado's absence is a bummer for anyone who was hoping to see some inbounds trickery. But it should open the door for Tyler Kolek to get serious run once head coach Mike Brown pulls the top of the rotation.
