Bryce Underwood, Michigan Upset by Minnesota, Kyle Whittingham's Updated Contract Buyout

Things are not going well for Bryce Underwood and Kyle Whittingham right now, as Michigan fell 20-14 to Minnesota on Saturday for its second consecutive loss.

Underwood, the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class, finished 10-of-21 for 101 yards passing with two interceptions and no touchdowns against Minnesota.

Whittingham, who left Utah after 22 seasons to become Michigan's head coach, signed a five-year, $41 million contract in December.

Per Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press, specific details of Whittingham's deal stipulate he would be owed 75 percent of the money remaining on his contract if he were to be fired without cause.

While the Wolverines have played largely uninspired football so far this season, Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck was more than happy to revel in the glow of his team's first home win over its Big Ten rival since 1977.

Whittingham's tenure at Utah was often up and down, but the highs were incredibly high. It included a 13-0 record in 2008 and eight seasons of at least 10 wins.

The Utes had a total of three 10-win seasons from 1905 to 2004.

If one were to mount a defense for Whittingham right now, he did take over a program that is still loaded with players who were recruited by Sherrone Moore's staff.

The transfer portal didn't produce huge results for Whittingham with a total of 17 incoming players this season.

Michigan's biggest problem is Underwood has not come close to living up to the hype that followed him as a high school prospect. He threw for 2,423 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions as a true freshman last year.

This season has been a step back in some ways for Underwood. He set season-lows in completion percentage (47.6), passing yards (101) and yards per attempt (4.8) on Saturday.

Michigan's offense has been held under 20 points in four of the first five games. Its lone game over that mark was against a UTEP defense that entered today with the fifth-worst defense in FBS by points allowed per game.

True freshman Tommy Carr is the Wolverines' backup quarterback. He was a 4-star recruit and No. 22 quarterback prospect in the 2026 class, per 247Sports' composite rankings.

Carr might not be a significant upgrade over Underwood at this point given his lack of experience, but the offense has been such a mess through five games that it can't hurt to see if things might improve with someone else under center.

Michigan is off next week before hosting Penn State and Indiana in back-to-back weeks.
