Joel Embiid Pokes Fun at Jaylen Brown for Having 'No Chance' Guarding Him During 76ers vs. Celtics
Joel Embiid respected new teammate Jaylen Brown for attempting to guard him during last year's Eastern Conference first-round playoff matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics.
Embiid doesn't seem inclined to let Brown forget how that turned out, however.
"I've had a lot of battles with him. One thing that I've always respected is how competitive he is," he told ESPN's Malika Andrews (2:50 mark). "Even when we came back down 3-1 against them last year, he took the challenge of guarding me. He knew he had no chance of getting a stop but I guess the other guys couldn't do it. And he was like, 'I've gotta try something.' You can only respect that. ... He knew before [he couldn't stop me], but you still gotta try... and find out."
Embiid and Brown jawed plenty in that series, but now the two are teammates in Philadelphia after a momentous offseason that also saw the addition of LeBron James.
One would imagine Brown is happy to let somebody else guard Embiid down in the post going forward, especially after Embiid averaged 28 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in the four games he played during the seven-game triumph over the Celtics.
