Miami OC Calls Out SEC, Blasts 'Ridiculous' CFB Preseason Rankings in New Video

Miami is No. 4 in the most recent Associated Press Top 25 poll, but its schedule and lack of ranked opponents figure to remain a talking point throughout the season.

With that as the backdrop, Hurricanes offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson is pushing back at the idea of having preseason rankings in the first place that can heavily impact how teams are seen and ranked later in the season. He also isn't a fan of all the love the SEC receives in those rankings.

"First of all, there should be no such thing as preseason rankings," Dawson told reporters. "That's the most ridiculous thing on the planet. That is the stupidest thing, because people weigh those things way heavier than they should.

"You shouldn't have a ranking until October. How do you know? (Texas) A&M was ranked in the top-five, but how does that look right now? If anything, it isn't predictable for the future, it's the past. Go look at the top-10 last year. I did. Five of them weren't even in the (end of season) Top 25."

Texas A&M is no longer ranked after losing to Kentucky and LSU by a combined 39 points in back-to-back weeks, but there are plenty of SEC teams rounding out the Top 25 with teams such as Kentucky and Missouri sneaking into the Nos. 24 and 25 spots.

Tennessee is also No. 17 despite extended struggles, along with Missouri, when it comes to beating even mediocre teams:

It seems like Dawson is aware of the SEC love, some of it unearned, from the voters.

"So we sit here and look at schedules, and obviously everything is SEC, SEC. Well look … they have all of their teams in the Top 25," he said. "Guess what. Good for you. At the end of the year, half of them won't be in the top 30. That's just the way it is. We can't sit here and say, 'hey, we play X number of Top-25 teams.' We don't know that. We'll count those chips up at the end of the year."

Miami did plenty of counting at the end of last season when it defeated two SEC teams in Texas A&M and Ole Miss in the College Football Playoff on the way to the national championship game, where it lost to Indiana.

At this point, the Hurricanes have just one team on their entire schedule this season that is ranked. That opponent is No. 3 Notre Dame, who they will face in a highly anticipated showdown on Nov. 7.

The schedule will be a talking point, although the CFP selection committee's rankings are the ones that will ultimately matter and not the AP poll.

Whether that committee is influenced by preseason rankings and so many SEC teams being ranked remains to be seen, but Dawson is doing his best to fight back at the notion the teams in that conference are better than others because of where they started the season in the poll.
