New NFL Rumors on Zxavian Harris and Dae'Quan Wright's Futures After Failing to Join LSU

Whether or not former NFL players fighting for NCAA eligibility practiced for college teams this summer could impact their professional futures, according to The Athletic's Jonathan Jones.

The NFL sent out a memo to teams earlier this month stating defensive tackle Zxavian Harris and tight end Dae'Quan Wright, who were released by NFL teams earlier this summer before trying to join LSU, were not eligible to play in the NFL this season.

According to Jones, Harris is now "in the better position of the two" because Wright reportedly joined LSU for practice before being deemed ineligible to play by both the NCAA and NFL.

"Wright, according to multiple reports, practiced for LSU before not being added to the roster," Jones reported. "That does not help Wright in any potential future claim, per one source with an understanding of the situation."

LSU head coach Lane Kiffin confirmed in late August Wright had joined his team for practice. Harris told reporters in early September his debut at LSU practice had been delayed by a foot injury.

Both Wright and Harris are part of a wave of players involved in legal action concerning the NCAA's decision to allow a fifth year of eligibility for athletes not including those who graduated last spring.

Wright was originally signed by the Philadelphia Eagles before he was claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Browns, which eventually cut him in August. ESPN reported at the time Wright was "believed to be the first player to have an agreement to return to play in college after signing with an NFL team as an undrafted free agent."

Harris, who was cut by the New Orleans Saints later that month, also confirmed his plans to return for a fifth college season at LSU.

For now, Harris and Wright could consider looking at options outside of the NCAA or NFL. Front Office Sports recently reported both players are eligible to join the UFL next season.
