Matt Leinart Reacts to Son Cole Committing to SMU, Talks 'Lack of Commitment and Loyalty'

Cole Leinart, the son of former Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart, is in his freshman year at SMU as the young quarterback looks to make a name for himself in college football.

The elder Leinart discussed what stood out about SMU while touching on the "lack of commitment and loyalty" in today's college football landscape.

"I'll help you and guide you as much as I can. That's my job as a dad. But at the end of the day, you've got to love this and you've got to want this," Leinart said on The Triple Option (1:02:30 mark). "This is your decision ultimately… For me and for Cole, SMU just checked every box. The coaching staff and Rhett Lashlee do a great job. In a world of NIL and a world of what feels like there's a lack of commitment and loyalty, I feel like there's just a commitment and loyalty there as much as there can be and it's just been a great place."

Cole was a 3-star prospect coming out of high school and was considered to be the No. 154 quarterback in the class of 2026, per 247Sports' composite rankings. He chose the Mustangs over Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado and more.

Leinart made an appearance in SMU's matchup against UC Davis, but he likely won't get much playing time this year since the Mustangs have star quarterback Kevin Jennings under center.
