Watch Vanderbilt Score Walk-Off TD After NC State Botches Intentional Safety in End Zone

North Carolina State provided a textbook example of what not to do when trying to run out the clock and take an intentional safety to preserve a win.

Holding a 31-28 lead over Vanderbilt with six seconds remaining, NC State quarterback CJ Bailey botched an attempt to run time off the clock, ran into a crowd of defenders and lost the ball in the end zone that was recovered by Vandy cornerback Cayden Daniels for the game-winning touchdown.

As you might expect with an absurd ending like that, social media was united in its quest to figure out the last time something had a finish this ludicrous.

Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea said afterward that one thing they preach is defending every blade of grass:

ESPN's Eli Lederman also pointed out that Vandy quarterback Jared Curtis' first start was promising even though it will get lost in the shuffle because of how this game ended.

Even though the finish will get all of the attention, NC State had a rough fourth quarter before the last-second meltdown. The Wolfpack defense gave up touchdowns on each of Vandy's first two possessions in the final period to keep the game close.

Bailey's decision-making was bad, but NC State head coach Dave Doeren didn't help him out. There were any number of ways to run out the final six seconds rather than having his quarterback dance around in his own end zone.

A quick punt out of bounds or throwing a go ball out of bounds in a way that there's a receiver in the area so it's not intentional grounding could eat up six seconds.

Regardless of the bad feeling coming from NC State's sideline, Vanderbilt can feel good about stealing a win that improves its record to 3-0 to start the season.
