Analysis

Much of the focus will be on Sullivan's inclusion, though it shouldn't come as much of a surpriseโ€”he's been thriving in MLS play and appears to be the next great superstar in United States soccer.

Sullivan now has five goals and six assists in his last seven MLS games and has been one of the most dynamic players in the entire league this season. His first call-up to the U.S. senior squad was only a matter of time, and Poch saw little reason to delay it any further.

Beyond that, Reyna will once again be available for Pochettino after his inclusion on the World Cup squad (and goal against Paraguay). Reyna's had a rocky enough relationship with the USMNT (and more than one club) that it's easy enough to forget that he's only 23 and still seemingly has his best football ahead of him.

Another notable inclusion is Musah, who was left off the World Cup roster after being a regular fixture for the USMNT, in large part down to a rough loan spell forย Serie A'sย Atalanta last season. But the 23-year-old has looked much improved upon his return to AC Milan and will get another look from Pochettino.

But there is also plenty of youth on the roster, which doesn't come as much of a surprise given past comments from Pochettino.

"We were talking a lot in the last few weeks, the coaching staff, trying to open a new chapter and not make it a continuation of what happened in the last 18 or 19 months that we were working," he said in August after signing a new contract with the USMNT. "We were only focused on arriving at the World Cup in the best condition. Now the approach is going to be different, and it must be different, because it's a four-year cycle. It's a project that is about establishing different principles."
