Check Out Akron's Results as Fan Serves as OC for 1st Drive vs. Robert Morris After Viral Contest

Akron's coaching staff had a unique addition to start the team's clash with Robert Morris on Saturday.

The Zips previously held an "Offensive Coordinator of the Game" promotion, as season-ticker holder Martin Allan Whims II received the opportunity to script their opening drive of Saturday's contest alongside head coach Joe Moorhead.

Here's how each play of the drive unfolded.

While the drive ended in a turnover, it was hardly the fault of the temporary offensive coordinator.

It was a commendable effort from Whims, as Akron was on the verge of picking up its second first down of the drive to advance deeper in Robert Morris' territory before the fumble occurred.

Prior to the game, Whims detailed his reaction to finding out that he won the play-calling contest.

"There's celebrities out there that bought 18 season tickets," Whims said, per SI.com's Patrick Andres. "You don't think your one entry's gonna be good enough to win it all. Just complete and utter shock and excitement—it's been quite the ride the past couple weeks since I found out I was a winner."

The Zips entered Saturday's action looking to improve to 1-1, as they suffered a 38-16 loss to Wake Forest in their season-opener on Sept. 3. While Akron hasn't posted a winning record since 2015, the team's win total has increased in each of the past two years under Moorhead.

"We're definitely at a point where I feel like we're starting to turn a corner, over the past couple years," Whims said, per Andres. "Hopefully we can get [to six wins] this year and maybe make it to a bowl game again."

Despite the opening-drive fumble, Akron held a 7-0 lead over Robert Morris at the end of the first quarter.
