Bill Belichick, UNC Won't Host Recruits for Week 2 Game as Penalty for Past Violations

Bill Belichick's ability to invite high school prospects to UNC's Saturday home opener is being restricted due to recruiting violations in his first year as head coach.

UNC spokesman Kevin Best said in a statement provided to WRAL's Brian Murphy the Tar Heels "self-reported a violation through our normal university compliance measures" last season.

"As a result, we are unable to host unofficial visits this weekend versus ETSU," Best said. "We are still permitted to host official visits this weekend but have decided as a program to concentrate our official visits on the remaining five home games.

"The situation has been properly resolved through the NCAA process, and we have worked with the NCAA and University compliance on appropriate and corrective action."

Some of the recruiting violations took place at UNC home games during the 2025 season, per On3's Ben Sherman.

These are not tied to the ongoing internal investigation surrounding the resignation of former general manager Michael Lombardi, Sherman reported.

According to Murphy, the violation did not involve cornerbacks coach Armond Hawkins and the suspension he served last October for recruiting violations.

High school recruits are scheduled to attend other UNC home games this season, according to Sherman.

UNC is set to kick off Week 2 Saturday at noon against visiting East Tennessee State.

UNC has five more home games remaining this season, but none until next month. The Tar Heels are scheduled to play Oct. 3 against No. 3 Notre Dame, Oct. 24 against Syracuse, Oct. 31 against No. 7 Miami, Nov. 14 against No. 24 Louisville and No. 28 against North Carolina State.

The Tar Heels opened the season Aug. 29 with a 15-10 Week 0 win against TCU in Ireland. UNC announced five days later Lombardi had resigned after being placed on administrative leave in July.

Belichick signed his head coaching contract with UNC in January 2025. The first Tar Heels recruiting class under his tenure was ranked 36th in the nation by 247Sports.

UNC's recruiting class this season featured 12 four-star prospects and was ranked 19th by 247Sports.
