Deion Sanders' Colorado Beats Georgia Tech in Wild Ending, Box Score, Top Player Stats & Highlights

For 58 minutes and 20 seconds, Georgia Tech and Colorado football played in a low-scoring rock fight in Atlanta.

That all changed in the final 100 seconds, which featured a frenetic finale.

Colorado emerged victorious 14-13 after (a) quarterback Julian Lewis found tight end Charlie Williams with a 20-yard touchdown pass with 37 seconds left and (b) Buffaloes defensive back Boo Carter blocked Georgia Tech's 45-yard field goal attempt as time ran out.

Colorado got the ball back with 1:40 left in regulation on its own 25-yard line, down 13-7. Lewis got the Buffaloes moving with some big chunk plays, including passes to DeKalon Taylor for 17 yards and Joseph Williams for 16. Taylor also rushed for 16, leading to Charlie Williams' touchdown on a wheel route.

However, Georgia Tech immediately fired back as quarterback Alberto Mendoza found Dalen Penson for 42 yards on a crossing route. Then a couple of three-yard plays put the ball on the Colorado 27-yard line with three seconds left. Carter came through with the massive block, though, and Sanders' Buffaloes started the year with a huge win.

Both teams had first-quarter scoring chances but couldn't pull through. Georgia Tech kicker Aidan Birr missed a 35-yard field goal. Colorado then drove down the field and earned a 1st-and-goal at the Georgia Tech three-yard line.

The Yellow Jackets held firm, though, and forced a 4th-and-goal from the three. DeKalon Taylor's rush fell a yard short, though.

The Buffaloes then benefited from a short field after Colorado forced a three-and-out and then got the ball back on the Yellow Jackets' 35-yard line. Running back Micah Welch's five-yard touchdown ended the drive and opened the scoring.

However, Georgia Tech immediately responded when Rakheem Smith returned the kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. Following the PAT, Georgia Tech and Colorado found themselves tied at seven.

Colorado drove to the Georgia Tech 40-yard line on its next drive but was forced to punt. The Yellow Jackets got pinned back again (this time on its own four-yard line) but engineered an impressive 92-yard drive that included five Alberto Mendoza complete passes for 83 yards. Aidan Birr's 22-yard field goal gave Georgia Tech the 10-7 lead with 2:03 left in the first half.

Both defenses stood tall in the scoreless third quarter, but Colorado got things going in the fourth as the Buffaloes ran 12 times for 39 yards, setting up a 38-yard field goal attempt. However, defensive tackle Shymeik Jones, who stands at 6'5", got up and blocked the kick.

Georgia Tech got the ball back on its own 21-yard line with 7:35 left and milked the clock for nearly six minutes, thanks in part to three third-down conversions, including two Mendoza passes to Jordan Allen (21 yards) and Kevin Roche Jr. (16 yards). The drive ended with Birr's second field goal, this time from 29 yards.

That led to a crazy finish, and Colorado ultimately emerged victorious. Lewis certainly deserves credit for his great play on the final drive, but credit goes to the defense as well, including defensive lineman Lamont Lester Jr., who had three sacks.

Both teams will now play at home on Saturday, Sept. 12. Colorado will face Weber State at 3:30 p.m. ET, and the Yellow Jackets will take on No. 20 Tennessee at 7 p.m.
