Explaining College Football 2026 Conference Realignment, 12-Team Playoffs, New Rules

The 2026 college football season begins on Saturday afternoon in Dublin, Ireland with a matchup between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the TCU Horned Frogs.

The majority of the top college football programs get started a week later in Week 1.

All of the FBS programs are chasing spots in the 12-team College Football Playoff once again.

Minimal changes were made across the board for the 2026 season. The biggest difference is the re-emergence of the Pac-12 and some swapping of conferences at the Group of Six level.

College Football Playoff Rules

The 12-team CFB Playoff will once again be in place for 2026.

The Indiana Hoosiers enter the regular season as the reigning national champion, but the Ohio State Buckeyes are the preseason No. 1 team.

The top four teams in the CFB Playoff rankings receive byes, while teams ranked No. 5-12 play each other in the opening round.

One of the 12 berths will go to the best Group of Six team. The four power-conference champions are assured of playoff berths, but they are not guaranteed to have a first-round bye.

The CFB Playoff National Championship takes place on January 25, 2027 at Allegiant Stadium, the home of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Conference Realignment

The biggest realignment for the 2026 season came through the renewal of the Pac-12.

The conference that was raided a few years ago primarily took teams from the Mountain West to move up to eight teams.

Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State, Utah State and Fresno State moved from the Mountain West to Pac-12.

Texas State shifted from the Sun Belt to Pac-12 to join up with the five Mountain West departures, Oregon State and Washington State.

Louisiana Tech left Conference USA to replace Texas State in the Sun Belt.

The Mountain West added Northern Illinois from the MAC, UTEP from C-USA and FCS powerhouse North Dakota State.

The MAC brought in Sacramento State to take Northern Illinois' spot.

New Rules

Only a few tweaks have been made to existing rules.

A change was made for targeting penalties. If a player is flagged for targeting for the first time, he will only be suspended for the second half of the current game, instead of the second half and the first half of his team's next contest.

If the player is called for his second targeting penalty, he will then be suspended for the first half of the next game, if the foul occurs in the second half of a game.

Offensive pass interference is now a 10-yard penalty, down from a 15-yard foul.

Coaches now have two replay challenges available to them per game. A third challenge could be earned if the first two challenges are successful.
