Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea revealed that a trade was "never the end goal for me" and he "always wanted to be here" after signing a new contract extension on Thursday, according to ESPN's Jenna Laine.

"Yeah, it's just all part of the business," Vea said, per Laine. "I got drafted here. I made it my home. I made Tampa my home. I love it here. The guys on the team are like brothers to me. We look at each other as family. So I didn't want to leave that behind and switch teams and get traded."

The two-time Pro Bowler requested a trade from Tampa Bay on July 27 following multiple failed attempts at finalizing a contract extension.

Vea ultimately agreed to a new one-year, $30 million contract to stay with the team that he's spent all eight seasons of his career with.

"It's just one of those things," Vea said, via Laine. "They took a chance on me in the draft, and I've been here ever since. And I fell in love with Tampa. I fell in love with my teammates. I love the organization. Everybody who works here. I walk around every day with a smile on my face."

The extension contains $6 million in new money for Vea's 2026 campaign and keeps him under contract for two more seasons.

"They say home is where the heart is. I feel like my heart is in Tampa," he said. "I always wanted to be a Buc, and I wanted to be a Buc for life."

Vea's long-term future in Tampa Bay was murky following the trade request. It's worth noting that he was alsoย holding inย during training camp, being present at practice despite not participating in any drills while he awaited a new deal.

Still, Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht was adamant about not trading Vea while both sides worked on an extension.

"I have no plans on trading Vita," Licht said on Aug. 6, perย Rick Stroudย of theย Tampa Bay Times.

Tampa Bay initially selected Vea with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, as he quickly blossomed into a key starter on their defense.

He's helped the Buccaneers make five playoff appearances throughout his tenure with the team, including a 2020 season that ended with a Super Bowl LV victory.

In 17 appearances last year, Vea racked up 34 tackles, 13 quarterback hits, seven tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He also amassed 51 pressures, according toย Pro Football Focus.

As the Buccaneers look to capture a sixth consecutive NFC South title in 2026, Vea won't be going anywhere.
