Vita Vea Requests Trade amid Contract Standoff, Top Landing Spots for Bucs DT

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have to consider life without a key pillar of their defense ahead the 2026 season.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Monday that star defensive tackle Vita Vea has "requested a trade after failed attempts at a contract extension, according to his agent Collin Roberts."

It sounds as though the Bucs and Vea aren't close when it comes to extension talks, though the Bucs also under no obligation to trade Vea. The main leverage Vea has is a holdout, though such a move would cost him in fines and potentially lost salary.

Vea, 31, is a two-time Pro Bowler who registered 34 tackles (seven for loss), 4.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits, two passes defensed and a fumble recovery in 17 games last season.

He's undoubtedly been an impact player for the Buccaneers throughout his eight-year career.

As for which teams might make sense as Vea suitors, he reportedly has a preference to head to the West Coast.

The Los Angeles Rams are pretty strapped from a cap perspective and have ongoing flirtations with the retired Aaron Donald, so they seem unlikely to be a suitor.

The Los Angeles Chargers, meanwhile, don't have a huge need on the interior, though Vea is obviously an impact player.

The San Francisco 49ers may not be the most natural schematic fit given the defense they run and have Osa Odighizuwa, Alfred Collins and C.J. West at defensive tackle, though given how injury-prone the team has been in recent years, adding as much talent as possible certainly wouldn't hurt.

And then there's the Las Vegas Raiders, a team that needs as much talent as it can get, though not at the expense of giving up valuable draft capital. Maxx Crosby would surely love an addition like Vea.

As for other possibilities, the Buffalo Bills would make sense as they transition to a 3-4 scheme, while the Green Bay Packers don't have many veteran options available at nose tackle. Both teams would have to carve out some room on the cap sheet, however, given Vea's desire for a raise.
