'Bunch of Nobodies,' Dabo Swinney Gives Thoughts on Clemson Roster Ahead of 2026 CFB Season

After a disappointing 2025 season, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney seems to be taking a rather humble approach to the 2026 campaign.

"Everybody's just working," he told reporters Wednesday when asked if anyone is standing out in practices. "We're just a bunch of nobodies. We'll see if anybody becomes somebody as we play some games."

Of course, Swinney publicly playing the role of underdog is nothing new.

He used to describe his program as "little ol' Clemson" even when it was a consistent national championship contender. He routinely positions his team as a plucky underdog, at least publicly, even when that's not the case in reality.

Swinney appears to be doing that again heading into the 2026 season.

Such an approach isn't that surprising after the Tigers entered the 2025 season at No. 4 in the Associated Press Top 25 just to finish with a 7-6 record and Pinstripe Bowl loss. It was the fewest number of wins in a season for the program since 2010 and a sign it may be falling behind some of the other nationally elite ones.

Still, Clemson isn't "a bunch of nobodies."

After all, it was the only ACC program with multiple players to receive votes for the ACC Preseason Player of the Year with defensive end Will Heldt and linebacker Sammy Brown. Heldt, Brown, wide receiver Bryant Wesco Jr. and cornerback Ashton Hampton were all on the All-ACC Preseason Team.

The talent is in place to be much better, and there will be no shortage of pressure on Swinney or the players.

The Tigers won't have to wait long to face some of that pressure, as they open the 2026 campaign on the road against LSU. A win could set the stage for quite a bounceback season, but a loss could raise even more questions after last year's poor effort.
