Power 4 College Football Teams with the Easiest Strength of Schedule

Favorable schedules do not lock in a successful year for college football teams, but avoiding a ton of marquee games can be immensely helpful.

Sure, a program with a lower strength of schedule may be hurt in the College Football Playoff rankings. However, a team might not have factored into that conversation without an easier slate.

No matter the context, competitive teams don't need to apologize for winning—even if their road looked a bit less painful.

Since the Group of Six leagues generally have lower competition levels, the focus is on teams from the Power Four: the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC.

Central Florida Knights

Back in 2016, the program finished 6-7 in Scott Frost's first season. The next year, UCF ripped off a 13-0 record and won a New Year's Six bowl.

History likely won't repeat itself, but another ascent may happen.

Frost, following a rough stint at Nebraska, returned to UCF and oversaw a 5-7 campaign in 2025. The hope is transfer QB Alonza Barnett III can spark the offense after he propelled James Madison to its College Football Playoff trip.

The schedule certainly seems to help, too. None of Texas Tech, Utah, Kansas State or Arizona are on the docket, and UCF hosts both TCU and BYU.

While I'm not sitting here projecting a nine- or 10-win campaign, the path is far more favorable than it could be.

Kansas State Wildcats

Staying with the Big 12, Kansas State has a similar outlook to UCF plus the bonus of not playing BYU, either.

In short: There is a huge opportunity for the Cats.

Sure, it's possible Texas Tech, BYU and Utah do not become the class of the conference as most anticipate will happen. On paper, though, missing all three of the league's top three contenders is a positive.

Tulane, Houston and Arizona come to Manhattan, and the Wildcats play at Arizona State and TCU. This is not a cakewalk for a team coming off a 6-6 year.

But if there's a bounce-back season ahead, the schedule looks helpful.

North Carolina State Wolfpack

By the first weekend of October, we should know if North Carolina State is a serious contender in the ACC.

Dave Doeren's team travels to Virginia—last year's conference runner-up—in the opener and hosts Louisville on Oct. 3. If the Wolfpack drop both games, they'll likely be out of the ACC picture.

Win both, and NC State becomes interesting in a hurry.

Buzzing through the rest of the slate, the Pack get Wake Forest, at Stanford, Cal, Duke, Syracuse, at Florida State and at North Carolina. That's a noticeable lack of Miami, SMU, Clemson, Pitt and even Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.

Again, consensus expectations will be wrong somewhere. Yet based on preseason views, NC State has a remarkably soft schedule.

SMU Mustangs

The outlook is similar for SMU, which plays at Florida State on Labor Day to begin the season and heads to Louisville in Week 3.

Two road contests, two likely hard-fought games.

But if the Mustangs split them, at the very least, they should be in a decent position to contend. Their remaining ACC slate is a home-heavy itinerary that doesn't include Miami, Clemson or Pitt.

True, the Mustangs head to Notre Dame for a late-November clash that might hold CFP implications. The result, however, won't affect them in the ACC standings.

SMU making its second CFP appearance would not be surprising.

Texas Tech Red Raiders

You know a good way to silence your (self-inflicted) critics?

Just win, baby.

Those immortal words from the late Al Davis, the longtime owner of the Oakland Raiders, apply nicely to these Red Raiders. The program has become the poster child of the NIL era thanks to some deep-pocketed boosters, and how the school handled the Brendan Sorsby drama this offseason was a masterclass of awful.

And you know what? Texas Tech can dismiss the noise. Armed with the Big 12's top roster, a thin nonconference slate and no BYU, Utah or Kansas State in league play, the Red Raiders should be favored in every game, too.

The simple reality is that college football fans around the country will not be celebrating every Texas Tech victory.

But just win, baby.

Heading into the 2025 campaign, Tony Elliott was on a sizzling seat. Virginia had trudged to 11 wins through three seasons with him in charge.

So, behind some impactful transfers and a wildly soft schedule, the Cavaliers matched that total in 2025 alone. Best of all for UVA, a repeat is well within reason because the slate, it appears, isn't much tougher.

Miami? Nope. Louisville? No sir. Clemson or Pitt? No ma'am.

Betting markets are not gospel, but those are four of the five programs (not named Virginia) with the shortest odds to win the ACC. The lone exception is SMU, to which the Hoos travel in mid-October.

Contests at FSU, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech should not be overlooked. If those are the next-toughest games behind SMU, though, that's not bad at all.
