Vinicius Junior, Real Madrid Reportedly Agree to New Contract Amid Arsenal Transfer Rumors

Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior won't be swapping one capital city for another after all.

The Athletic's David Ornstein and Mario Cortegana reported Thursday that Vinícius tentatively agreed to a new contract with Real Madrid.

The 2024 Ballon d'Or runner-up indicated on social media the deal will run for six years.

He had been linked with a possible transfer to reigning Premier League champion Arsenal.

The news was a bit of a stunner because star players typically don't leave Real Madrid in the prime of their careers. Cortegana posited that "a renewal has always been seen as the most logical outcome given that the priority for Madrid and Vinícius Jr has always been to stay together."

A transfer at least looked plausible due to a few different factors.

Vinícius became a somewhat polarizing figure as Madrid was a distant second to Barcelona in La Liga and lost in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. His formed dipped a bit, and there was a broad sense the notable players had gained too much influence behind the scenes.

Maybe it was time for Vini and Real Madrid to go their separate ways.

The manager just hired by the club also had some history with the dynamic attacker. Only months ago, Jose Mourinho downplayed the significance of racial abuse Vinícius allegedly suffered from Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni.

But Cortegana reported in May that Vini wouldn't have an issue with Mourinho taking over.

Signing a new contract will now preclude the drama that would've increasingly surrounded Vinícius becoming a free agent next summer.

Plenty of questions remain, namely how Mourinho will get all of the pieces to fit.

Real Madrid announced Thursday it's signing Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig with the transfer fee reportedly worth nine figures. Diomande joins an attack that includes Kylian Mbappé, Rodrygo, Brahim Díaz and will have Vinícius for the foreseeable future.

Maybe Mourinho is the one with the personality and stature to have everyone pulling in the same direction.

It's equally easy to envision a situation where a lot of the same frustrations with Vini emerge, only this time a potential exit is complicated by a new contract that presumably includes a sizable wage increase.
