League Two side Portsmouth managed the upset of the day, beating Derby County 2-1, while Preston North End advanced with a 3-1 win over Crewe Alexandra.

Recap

Middlesbrough missed a penalty early, but the Championship side had no problems whatsoever against Oldham Athletic, cruising to a routine 3-1 win. Stuani was the big hero for the visitors, scoring twice on his debut, per the Capital One Cup's official Twitter account:

David Cornell managed to stop Adam Clayton's penalty after just seven minutes, giving the home fans hope for an upset, but it quickly became clear Boro were simply too strong for the League One team. Chance after chance fell to the visitors before Yanic Wildschut opened the score inside of 20 minutes.

Stuani doubled Middlesbrough's lead just before half-time with a perfect header, taking just about all of the suspense out of the match. BBC Radio's Ian Cheeseman was impressed with what he saw:

The Uruguay international then found himself on the end of a James Husband cross to double his tally, and he nearly completed his hat-trick minutes later, as his powerful shot was charged down in the nick of time. Daniel Philliskirk pulled one back for Oldham in injury time.

Portsmouth's excellent start to the 2015-16 campaign continued with a shock 2-1 win over Derby County. As shared by bet365, Pompey have little to complain about right now:

There was plenty of chatter on social media about the unusual camera angle provided for the match between Portsmouth and Derby County, with Sky Sports Football even going as far as releasing an official apology. The Guardian's Sachin Nakrani thought it gave the fans a glimpse of how most coaches and managers experience the match:

Adam McGurk gave the hosts a surprising but well-deserved lead after 50 minutes, powering a header past Lee Grant. Pompey had several chances to extend their lead, but poor finishing cost them.

Jason Shackell equalised for the Rams from a corner kick, but Conor Chaplin restored the lead almost immediately after. Derby should have been given a penalty with 10 minutes left to play when Danny Hollands brought down Johnny Russell inside the box, but for some reason, the official awarded a free-kick.

Even Portsmouth's official Twitter account could see that was wrong:

Despite a late push from the Rams, Portsmouth managed to hang on to their lead, booking their spot in the next round.

As shared by Pompey's official Twitter account, Derby County boss Paul Clement acknowledged his team was deservedly beaten by their League Two foes:

In the final match of the day, Preston North End comfortably beat Crewe Alexandra. Jordan Hugill and William Keane gave the visitors a two-goal lead, and while Adam King managed to pull one back before half-time, Crewe never seemed likely to bridge the gap. Josh Brownhill restored the two-goal lead late in the second half.

The final match of the first round of the 2015 Capital One Cup will be played on Thursday between Doncaster Rovers and Leeds United.
