Most Exciting Conference Games to Watch in 2026 College Football Season

Thanks to a change in the College Football Playoff system for the 2026 season, conference games have never been more important.

And that's no hyperbole.

Within the four power conferences—the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC—the champion is guaranteed a ticket to the CFP. That's a slight tweak compared to previous years, yet it's massively important.

The following list of games, which also includes some marquee showdowns in the Group of Six leagues, seem likely to have a major impact on the story of 2026.

Group of 6 Conferences

Headliner: Boise State at Fresno State (Oct. 10, Pac-12)

Relative to the Playoff race, the early G6 favorite—shockingly—is Boise State. Whether the Broncos can handle a late-night trip to Fresno State, another top contender in the renewed Pac-12, will be a pivotal moment for seeing whether our expectations should be maintained or adjusted.

Key Game: Navy at UTSA (Oct. 17, American)

It's a similar story for Navy, the preseason front-runner in the American. UTSA, however, has been excellent at home for the better part of a half-decade and might throw a wrench into Navy's championship dreams.

Do you want to know if Miami can sustain its success? Do you want to find out if Clemson may rebound? Friend, do I have a clash for you! Both programs will have already played two ACC contests, but this result in Death Valley on the first weekend of October will determine the outlooks of two leading ACC hopefuls.

Key Game: SMU at Louisville (Sep. 19)

Honestly, if you wanted to flip these matchups, I would not argue. The earlier timing of SMU's trip to Louisville makes it very impactful, as well. Although the loser here won't be close to eliminated from ACC contention, this game appears it could provide a critical win in potential tiebreaker scenarios.

Headliner: Ohio State at Indiana (Oct. 17)

There are worse places to start than a rematch of last year's Big Ten Championship Game. Ohio State is always a high-end threat but wants to recover from a rough finish to the 2026 campaign. Indiana, which is aiming to prove it has joined that elite-every-season territory, should be 6-0 entering this showdown.

Key Game: Oregon at Ohio State (Nov. 7)

The other member of the Big Ten's first-tier contender group, Oregon is targeting a third straight CFP bid. After winning the league in 2024, the Ducks fell frustratingly short last season because it lost at home to Indiana. The path to a conference title runs through Columbus this season.

Last season, a couple of fourth-quarter touchdowns propelled BYU to a 24-21 win. What does the Holy War have in store this year?

Key Game: Houston at Texas Tech (Sep. 18)

Texas Tech, despite its offseason drama, is still clearly the preseason Big 12 favorite. Houston is a not-so-sneaky threat to the Red Raiders' crown, though, and this Friday night showdown marks the start of conference play for both teams.

Among the many correct answers, how about a rematch of the SEC Championship Game? Georgia lost the regular-season clash in 2025 but throttled Alabama to secure the conference title. The noise around Bama coach Kalen DeBoer may return in a hurry if the Crimson Tide lose at home to UGA, considering Tennessee and Texas A&M await in the following weeks.

Key Game: LSU at Ole Miss (Sep. 19)

You might recall the whole "Lane Kiffin had Ole Miss on the doorstep of the Playoff but bolted for LSU with a bunch of coaches yet wanted to coach Ole Miss anyway and was told no, then Ole Miss reached the CFP semifinals" thing from 2025. Even if there's no public bad blood between Kiffin, Pete Golding and their respective programs, emotions will be running high in this prime-time affair.
