Kyler Murray Addresses QB1 Battle vs. J.J. McCarthy in New Video amid Vikings Camp

Kyler Murray is looking to make a first impression at training camp during his quarterback battle with J.J. McCarthy by focusing on taking the process one step at a time.

"I'm not too focused on the long term vision of it," the Minnesota Vikings quarterback told reporters Wednesday. "I'm really just focused on the process of it, and that's day to day. Coming out here today with this walkthrough and then practice later, trying to put my best foot forward and then prove to the coaches and guys what I'm capable of."

Alec Lewis of The Athletic reported Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell met with both quarterbacks and plans on giving them a 50-50 split with the first- and second-team offenses early on in training camp.

However, that figures to change as the season approaches and there is more urgency to make a decision.

Neither quarterback comes into the competition with significant individual momentum, although Murray has a much more established track record in the NFL.

McCarthy missed his rookie season in 2024 with injury and then largely struggled last season while completing 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions to go with a suboptimal 35.6 QBR.

As for Murray, he played just five games last season for the Arizona Cardinals after appearing in eight games during the 2023 campaign. Durability has been a concern of late, although he also has the 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year and two Pro Bowl nods on his resume.

At his best, Murray can make plays happen with both his arm and his legs. He threw for more than 3,700 yards in each of his first three seasons in the league and again in 2024. He also has 3,193 yards and 32 touchdowns on the ground as a runner during his career.

Given McCarthy's struggles last season, Murray's list of accomplishments and the Vikings' decision to bring the latter in this offseason, some might see it as a surprise he isn't the clear-cut starter at this point.

But Minnesota also used a top-10 pick on McCarthy in 2024 and surely envisioned him as a franchise cornerstone when it did so.

It is a competition that will define the NFC North team's training camp ahead of its Sept. 13 season opener against the Green Bay Packers, but Murray is just focusing on what he can control with his day-to-day approach.
