Jul 29, 2026

All 32 NFL teams are now in training camp, and practices are now taking place around the league.

While the start of the preseason is still over a week away, and position battles aren't close to being settled, there's plenty to glean from early camp reports, rumors, and highlights.

The Atlanta Falcons, for example, will have to wait to even begin their highly anticipated quarterback competition. They and a few other teams are also dealing with contract situations as camps get underway. We saw some notable injury updates on Wednesday, and, unfortunately, some potentially significant injuries.

With another day of training camp practices in the books, here's WHAT TO KNOW from Wednesday:

  • Running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and Bijan Robinson are not practicing amid contract discussions with the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons, respectively.
  • Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase was involved in the first notable training camp fight of 2026.
  • Tua Tagovailoa is sidelined with a "flare-up" for early Falcons camp, while Michael Penix Jr. still hasn't been cleared for 11-on-11 drills.
  • A Week 1 return for Green Bay Packers tight end Tucker Kraft is "very much a possibility."
  • New Orleans Saints defensive lineman Bryan Bresee is feared to have suffered a torn ACL.

Patrick Mahomes Did 'Just About Everything' at Chiefs Practice

Chiefs Camp Football

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is working his way back from a torn ACL that he suffered in mid-December. While he was fully cleared ahead of training camp, that didn't guarantee that he would hit the ground running at practice.

A lot of running may not be in the cards for Mahomes, who is wearing a brace on his reconstructed left knee. However, ESPN's Benjamin Solak reported on Wednesday that Mahomes "did just about everything you could ask him to do" during practice.

Per Solak, Mahomes fully participated in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills. As captured by Taylor Burr of Fox 4 Sports, Mahomes was also working to reestablish his chemistry with star tight end Travis Kelce:

It remains to be seen how quickly Mahomes can return to pre-injury form or if he'll adopt a new playing style after the injury. What is clear is that Kansas City will have a legitimate chance to bounce back in 2026 if Mahomes is healthy enough to start all 17 games.

Buccaneers Not Looking to Trade Vita Vea 'Right Now'

Buccaneers Football

Vita Vea's trade request to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has been one of the biggest stories of early training camp. While the standout defensive tackle did report to training camp, he didn't practice on Wednesday after "tweaking something."

While Vea appears to be angling for a pay raise and may not actually prefer a change of scenery, there's no telling how his hold-in might play out. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, though, the Bucs are not actively looking to trade their centerpiece defender.

"They're not looking to trade him right now," Schefter said on Wednesday's episode of The Pat McAfee Show (beginning at the 1:10 mark). "At least, that's what they say. But at this time last year, Dallas wasn't looking to trade Micah Parsons, either."

It'll likely take some time for Vea's situation in Tampa to be resolved, but it seems that the Buccaneers won't be quick to honor his trade request.

New-Look Eagles Offense Starts to Take Shape

Eagles Football

The Philadelphia Eagles offense will look quite a bit different in 2025. For one, the Eagles traded away star receiver A.J. Brown at the beginning of June. Secondly, Philadelphia will have a first-time offensive coordinator in Sean Mannion.

Fans got an initial glimpse of Mannion's offense in Wednesday's practice. According to Eliot Shorr-Parks of WIP-FM Philadelphia, the offense featured "everything Eagles fans wanted to see," including crossing routes, play-action, and yards after the catch.

Shorr-Parks also noted that quarterback Jalen Hurts appeared to be quicker than he was last season:

John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia also reported that the offense featured plenty of throws over the middle, a change from last season's system that often saw Brown and DeVonta Smith attacking the perimeter and deep areas of the field:

According to Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia, Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, Marquise Brown, and rookie first-rounder Makai Lemon got "the bulk" of the first-team reps at wide receiver.

Eagles' Jonathan Greenard Avoids Serious Injury, Will Open Camp on the PUP List

New Philadelphia Eagles edge-rusher Jonathan Greenard opened training camp on the physically unable to perform list with a pectoral injury that he suffered while weight lifting.

While we've seen NFL players suffer significant pectoral injuries while weight training in the past—Green Bay Packers tight end said his "popped right off the bone" in 2024—Greenard's injury appears to be relatively minor.

General manager Howie Roseman told reporters on Wednesday that Greenard's pectoral strain is not expected to be a long-term issue.

The Eagles acquired Greenard in a draft-day trade with the Minnesota Vikings. The 29-year-old was a Pro Bowler for Minnesota in 2024.

Day 1 of Browns' QB Competition is Complete

QB Competitions Football

The Cleveland Browns aren't widely expected to be competitive in 2026, but they are holding one of this year's most intriguing quarterback competitions. Deshaun Watson is battling with Sheduer Sanders, whom many viewed as a first-round talent and a future NFL star before last year's surprising draft-day slide.

Cleveland also has second-year quarterback Dillon Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green in its QB room. All four quarterbacks were on the practice field on Wednesday, and ESPN Cleveland provided camp stats for the signal-callers:

While raw camp statistics are ultimately meaningless—especially with no down, distance, or situational context—they're fun to track and can provide fans with at least a little insight into how a competition is unfolding.

Sanders probably isn't actually ahead in the competition after Day 1, especially with Watson getting all of the first-team reps. However, he had a high completion rate and finished the day without an interception.

Watson, meanwhile, tossed a pair of picks, one of which was snagged by the recently extended Denzel Ward:

Lamar Jackson Won't Comment on Contract Negotiations

Ravens Camp Football

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is looking for a bounce-back campaign under new head coach Jesse Minter and new offensive coordinator Declan Doyle. He's also looking for a contract extension after agreeing to a restructuring early in the offseason.

However, when asked about a potential contract extension by reporters on Wednesday, Jackson said that he'd prefer to keep discussions between himself and general manager Eric DeCosta.

"I'm going to keep it the same way I've been keeping it," Jackson said (h/t The Baltimore Sun). "It's private."

DeCosta did hint about an extension after the Ravens restructured Jackson's contract to free up around $40 million in cap space.

"We're certainly hopeful that we'll get an extension done. I think it's important to both parties," DeCosta said in March, per Clifton Brown of the team's official website.

Jackson's current contract runs through 2027 and will include cap hits of $34.4 million in 2026 and $84.3 million in 2027.

Panthers Rookie WR Chris Brazzell II Suffers LCL Tear

Panthers Camp Football

The Carolina Panthers made a couple of moves to upgrade Bryce Young's supporting cast this offseason, bringing in receiver John Metchie III and drafting Tennessee wideout  Chris Brazzell II in Round 3.

Unfortunately, one of the new additions is likely to miss the start of the regular season.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Brazzell suffered a "moderate LCL tear" in his left knee during Wednesday's practice and is "expected to be sidelined for up to eight weeks."

Brazzell caught 62 passes for 1,017 yards and nine touchdowns last season while averaging an impressive 16.4 yards per catch. He's expected to add an explosive element to Carolina's passing attack, though it appears he'll have a delayed start to his rookie season.

Bills Fans Get First Look at D.J. Moore

Bills Camp Football

If you haven't heard, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen will have a new go-to target in 2026. The Bills traded for D.J. Moore just before April's draft, sending the Chicago Bears a second-round pick for the wideout and a fifth-round pick.

Fans got an early look at the budding connection between Allen and Moore in Wednesday's practices, as shown in this clip from NFL insider Jordan Schultz:

Moore had seen a reduced role in the Chicago offense in each of the last two seasons. However, he tallied 1,364 yards as the Bears' top target in 2023 and logged three different 1,100-yard campaigns during his time with the Carolina Panthers.

Last season, Khalil Shakir led all Bills receivers with just 719 receiving yards.

Malik Nabers Back on the Field for Giants

New York Giants fans got a good look at standout wide receiver Malik Nabers on Wednesday, as he was on the field and catching passes from quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Nabers, of course, is working his way back from a torn ACL and is hoping to be back by the start of the regular season. Being on the practice field is obviously a good first step, though New York isn't ready to guarantee a Week 1 debut.

"We're going to see," general manager Joe Schoen said Wednesday, per Darryl Slater of NJ.com. "The medical staff has a really good plan for him. We're going to listen to the patient, so we're going to see how he reacts. As long as everything goes as planned, we'll listen to Malik and his body. And hopefully, he'll be ready."

Nabers appeared in only four games last season before the injury, but he recorded 109 catches for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie in 2024.

Fan Makes Impressive Catch at Patriots Camp

While early training camp is often a serious affair, it's worth noting that it can bring some lighthearted moments, too. Take this clip from New England Patriots camp, for example, in which one attentive fan makes an incredible catch on an errant throw.

For many teams, fans are a big part of training camp and play a role in welcoming the players back to work. In this instance, they're also getting in on the action.

And, no, the Patriots won't be dragging this fan out of the stands and inserting him into the receiver room. Following the offseason additions of A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs, New England's receiving corps looks much better, on paper, than it did a year ago.

For a look at the Patriots' actual receiver group, check out this connection between Drake Maye and fourth-year receiver Kayshon Boutte:

Browns Agree to 3-Year Extension with Grant Delpit

Titans Browns Football

On Tuesday, the Cleveland Browns made waves by giving cornerback Denzel Ward a two-year, $62.2 million extension that makes him the highest-paid cornerback in the league. It turns out that the Browns weren't finished locking up members of their secondary.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Browns and Delpit agreed to a three-year, $48 million extension on Wednesday. Per Rapoport, the deal will include $35 million guaranteed.

Delpit, a 2020 second-round pick out of LSU, was entering the final year of a three-year extension. The 27-year-old missed his rookie season with a torn Achilles, but he's been a staple of the Browns' defense ever since. Last season, he appeared in all 17 games and finished with 89 tackles, three sacks, and an interception.

Saints' Bryan Bresee Feared to Have Suffered a Torn ACL

Falcons Saints Football

Injuries are an unfortunate part of football, and as players know all too well, they don't wait for the regular season. The New Orleans Saints may be dealing with a significant one involving standout defensive lineman Bryan Bresee.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, Bresee is feared to have suffered a torn ACL on Wednesday.

A first-round pick out of Clemson in 2023, Bresee became a full-time starter in his second season and has started to emerge as a disruptive interior defender. In 49 games with 26 starts for the Saints, he has recorded 86 tackles, 14.5 sacks, and 19 tackles for loss.

Bresee is still undergoing tests to determine the severity of his injury, but if he is indeed done for the season, New Orleans will have a big hole to fill in its defensive front.

Jadeveon Clowney Working out for Browns, Reunion Possible

Cowboys Commanders Football

The Cleveland Browns are working to revamp their pass-rush after trading Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams last month. They received Pro Bowler Jared Verse back in the Garrett deal, and they may be bringing back a familiar face in early camp.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Jadeveon Clowney is in Cleveland today for a workout with the Browns:

Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com also reported that the Browns are "strongly considering" a reunion with Clowney:

Clowney played for Cleveland in 2021 and 2022, and he was particularly effective in his first season with the club, which he finished with nine sacks. He spent last season with the Dallas Cowboys and recorded 8.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and 10 quarterback hits.

The first overall pick in the 2014 draft, Clowney is searching for a home for his 13th NFL season.

Kyler Murray Appears to Be Favorite for Vikings' Job, But Future Uncertain if He Isn't QB1

QB Competitions Football

The Minnesota Vikings are holding a highly-intriguing quarterback competition between 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy and free-agent addition Kyler Murray. ESPN's Dan Graziano reported on Wednesday that, while Murray is probably the front-runner, he isn't guaranteed to win the job:

"It's absolutely possible McCarthy proves to be the better option in camp. But given the way last season went, it does feel as if McCarthy is starting from behind and would really have to be lights out to win the job."

Graziano also noted that Murray's future could become uncertain if McCarthy were to pull off the upside and win the QB1 job coming out of camp:

"If McCarthy does win it, people around the league would be interested to see whether the Vikings even keep Murray, since they also brought back veteran Carson Wentz, who proved to be a capable fill-in last season before suffering his own season-ending injury."

Given the instability the Vikings had at quarterback last season, they could prefer to keep all three quarterbacks on the roster—they still have Max Brosmer, too. However, Murray might be the only one with any real trade value if Minnesota decides he's expendable.

While Murray's tenure with the Arizona Cardinals ended in disappointment, the 2019 first overall pick was a Pro Bowler early in his career and will only turn 29 next month.

49ers Have 'Concern' About Ricky Pearsall Amid PCL Recovery

The San Francisco 49ers' receiving corps continues to be a work in progress.

Brandon Aiyuk remains away from the team—and highly unlikely to suit up for the 49ers again—while George Kittle opened camp on the PUP list while recovering from a torn Achilles. Mike Evans was added in free agency, while Kendrick Bourne and Jauan Jennings both departed.

2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall is widely expected to play a prominent role in San Francisco's new-look unit, but he'll have to be healthy to do so. Unfortunately, the 49ers have some "concern" about knee swelling related to last season's PCL injury, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.

Pearsall initially suffered the injury in Week 4 of last season. While he returned in Week 10, he re-aggravated the injury in December. In all, the Florida product recorded 36 catches for 528 yards in nine games last year.

Bengals' Ja'Marr Chase Involved in Camp Practice Scuffle

Bengals Camp Football

NFL players have been waiting all offseason to get back to work. That pent-up energy, combined with the summer heat, often leads to flared tempers in early camp. The Cincinnati Bengals saw a bit of that in Wednesday's practice when star receiver Ja'Marr Chase decided to get physical with a couple of defensive teammates.

As captured by Jaron May of WLWT Cincinnati, Chase was involved in a scuffle with several defenders, including DJ Turner II and Jalen Davis:

While the Bengals undoubtedly don't want standouts like Chase and Turner exposing themselves to any unnecessary injuries, fans may be pleased to see them practicing with a physical edge.

Cincinnati has developed a bit of a reputation as a finesse team in recent years, and it arguably didn't see enough fight from its defense last season—when the Bengals ranked 31st in yards allowed and 30th in points allowed.

Chase, on the other hand, racked up 125 receptions for 1,412 yards last season despite playing over half the year without quarterback Joe Burrow.

This might be the Bengals' first big practice fight of 2026, but it certainly won't be the last training camp squabble we see this summer.

Titans Rookie WR Carnell Tate Impressing Early

Titans Football

The Tennessee Titans came into the 2026 offseason knowing that they needed to put better pieces around second-year quarterback Cam Ward. In the draft, they used the fourth overall pick on Ohio State's Carnell Tate to give Ward a legitimate No. 1 wide receiver.

Tate appears to be making a strong early impression in camp. According to A to Z Sports Nashville, Tate made a big contested catch in the end zone with a well-placed ball from Ward. The rookie receiver can be seen in the accompanying clip showcasing his smooth route skills and reliable hands.

Tate wasn't the top-ranked receiver on the Bleacher Report Scouting Department's final draft board—that honor went to New Orleans Saints rookie Jordyn Tyson—but the former Buckeye was noted as being the most pro-ready while having the best hands and best route-running.

If Tate develops as quickly as expected, he'll help Ward make a Year-2 jump, while potentially rewarding a few fantasy managers as a rookie sleeper.

As Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport recently noted, Tate is currently trending as WR29 in draft rankings.

Tucker Kraft Back on the Field, 'Very Much a Possibility' to Play in Week 1

Panthers Packers Football

Green Bay Packers tight end Tucker Kraft was having a career year in 2025 when a torn ACL cut his campaign short. In eight games, he recorded 32 receptions for 489 yards and six touchdowns.

The good news for Green Bay is that Kraft was on the field for Packers camp on Tuesday.

Kraft, who opened camp on the physically unable to perform list, appears to only be a limited participant at this point. However, general manager Brian Gutekunst called a Week 1 return "very much a possibility" for Kraft.

"Obviously, we want to be protective. He's coming off a major injury and he's still at about that eight-and-a-half-month mark. But by the way he looks, you'd think he's ready to go," Gutekunst told reporters on Wednesday (h/t ProFootballTalk's Myles Simmons).

Kraft is one of two Packers stars currently recovering from a torn ACL, along with edge-rusher Micah Parsons.

Ravens Activate Nnamdi Madubuike from PUP List

Browns Ravens Football

The Baltimore Ravens were dealt a massive blow last season when star defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike suffered a Week 2 neck injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season. The injury ultimately required surgery, and it was unclear when Madubuike would be back on the field for Baltimore.

On Wednesday, the Ravens got their answer. While Madubuike was medically cleared ahead of camp, he still opened it on the physically unable to perform list.

According to The Athletic's Jeff Zrebiec Madubuike had "been cleared to practice by independent spine and cervical doctors" but was placed on the PUP list on Saturday to give the Ravens time to evaluate him.

On Wednesday, the Ravens announced that Madubuike had passed his physical and will come off the PUP list.

A 2020 third-round pick out of Texas A&M, Madubuike made the Pro Bowl in 2023 and 2024, and he signed a four-year, $98 million extension a little over two years ago. His return is a very big development for the Ravens defense and new head coach Jesse Minter.

Bengals DE Shemar Stewart Carted off With Apparent Knee Injury

Bengals Commanders Football

Injuries are, unfortunately, an unavoidable part of training camp. Second-year defensive end Shemar Stewart may have suffered a significant one during Wednesday's practice.

According to The Athletic's Paul Dehner Jr., Stewart went down during the Cincinnati Bengals' first 11-on-11 drills and was unable to put weight on his left leg before he was eventually carted off.

Caleb Noe of WCPO Cincinnati had footage of the injury (Warning: The video is uncomfortable to watch):

The Bengals selected Stewart 17th overall out of Texas A&M in last year's draft. Ankle and knee injuries limited him to eight games last season, and he finished his rookie campaign with 11 tackles, a sack, and four quarterback hits.

Update: Stewart was spotted in a protective leg brace and on crutches on Wednesday afternoon, according to ESPN's Ben Baby.

Chris Olave Not Practicing as Contract Talks Continue

The New Orleans Saints opened training camp with some terrific news on the injury front. Rookie first-round pick Jordyn Tyson, who was dealing with a hamstring injury, passed his conditioning test. Chris Olave, who had been limited since having a blood clot in his lung discovered in January, was cleared with no restrictions to open camp.

However, Olave is sitting out team drills as he and the Saints negotiate a new contract, according to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.

Olave, the 11th overall pick in the 2022 draft, has been extension-eligible since last offseason but experienced an injury-plagued season in 2024. He was mostly healthy last year and finished with 1,163 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.

There's a 'Possibility' C.J. Stroud Extension Gets Done

Texans Football

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield tried to get a new contract this offseason, but reported to camp without one and will play on his current deal, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Jenna Laine. Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud may not have to do the same.

Stroud, the second overall pick in the 2023 draft, became extension-eligible this offseason and has engaged in contract talks with the Texans. On Wednesday, general manager Nick Caserio told reporters (h/t Bleacher Report's Julia Stumbaugh) that there's a chance that a deal gets done in the near future.

"I'd say we've definitely had productive conversations over the course of this spring, so there's a possibility that something could come to fruition," Caserio said. "We'll work through it and see what happens."

Stroud was the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year and has helped Houston reach the playoffs in each of his first three seasons. However, his play has been a bit more inconsistent over the last two years, and he has failed to match the production and efficiency he showcased as a rookie.

The Texans don't need to make a decision now, as they have Stroud under contract through 2027 after exercising his fifth-year option.

Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs Not Practicing Amid Contract Talks

Lions Football

On Tuesday, we saw Jalen Carter and Denzel Ward both sign record-setting contracts. A couple of notable running backs who are extension-eligible this offseason are also hoping to earn lucrative paydays. They may also be willing to hold-in in order to get it.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs and Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson are both not practicing on Wednesday.

Robinson and Gibbs were selected eighth overall and 12th overall, respectively, in the 2023 draft. Both backs have also become superstar players with their respective teams. This past season, Robinson logged a league-high 2,298 scrimmage yards, while Gibbs had 1,839 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Presumably, both backs believe they deserve to be the NFL's new highest-paid running back. Saquon Barkley currently leads the RB market with a deal worth $20.6 million annually.

The Vita Vea Hold-In Appears to Have Begun

Buccaneers Football

Unable to get a new contract, defensive tackle Vita Vea issued a trade request to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the start of training camp.

Tuesday's news that the Philadelphia Eagles signed defensive tackle Jalen Carter to a deal worth $38 million annually likely did nothing to soften Vea's stance that he deserves a raise.

Vea is scheduled to make $22.2 million in the final year of his current deal.

Given his trade request and absence from practice, it appears his hold‑in has begun. Head coach Todd Bowles announced on Wednesday morning that Vea isn't practicing.

Fans can expect to see Vea on the sideline in training camp, but they should also expect to see him on the sideline for the foreseeable future.

Falcons' Tua Tagovailoa Experiences 'Flare-Up,' Penix Still Not Cleared

Falcons OTA Football

The Falcons are expected to hold one of the more intriguing quarterback competitions in camp this year. They have 2024 first-round pick Michael Penix Jr., who is coming off a torn ACL, and they added former Miami Dolphins Pro Bowler Tua Tagovailoa in free agency. The two will be battling to start in new head coach Kevin Stefanski's offense.

However, Atlanta must press the pause button on the competition for now. Tagovailoa is sidelined with what is described as a "flare-up," according to Stefanski. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the quarterback is dealing with a tight back.

Penix, meanwhile, has still not been cleared to participate in full team, 11-on-11 drills.

According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, Tagovailoa saw most of the first-team reps in the early offseason with Penix sidelined. Some insiders believe that if Penix can't get healthy and win the job in camp, Tagovailoa may never relinquish it.

"If Tua is running the offense and they're winning games, they're not going to throw Penix in there just to get a look at him," an unnamed AFC scout said, per Graziano.

According to Schefter, the Falcons are adding Cooper Rush for depth to begin camp. Atlanta also released Trevor Siemian after he aggravated a preexisting calf injury, according to Daniel Flick of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Falcons also have undrafted rookie Jack Strand in their quarterback room.
